Digital Strategy Workshops for Chemical and Petrochemical Processing Industries

Digital Twin, Chemical Engineering

Siemens is a proud sponsor of the 2019 AIChE Annual Meeting. Join us for a series of workshops to learn how Siemens can help you succeed in today’s chemical and petrochemical processing industries.

1.   Capital Asset Lifecycle Management for the Chemical Industry | 8:30 – 10:00 AM

Capital Asset Lifecycle Management helps companies make the transition to digitalization, by offering solutions for the planning, design, construction and operation of a capital asset as well as the systems and equipment that make up the capital asset. The solution weaves a digital thread throughout the capital asset lifecycle - from project delivery into operations - to deliver advanced capital project management capabilities as well as a “simulations driven” approach to design, construction and operations. To accomplish this, the solution aggregates and unifies project and operational data from disparate systems (such as third-party CAD/CAE/BIM authoring systems), enables enterprise business processes to manage the evolution of data, and provides decision-support capabilities via analytics, visualization, and simulation. The new solution helps to address many of the challenges facing todays capital asset stakeholders: greenfield and brownfield capital project delays and cost overruns.

  • CALM: Information authored in design tools (including partners) can be exported into a single lifecycle management solution that improves collaboration and centralizes change management
  • Presentation
  • Recorded demo
  • Early pilots/successes

2.   Performance Digital Twin for Process Industry | 12:30 – 2:00 PM
Role of physics-based simulation in digitalization

Understanding of transport processes (fluid flow, heat transfer & mass transfer) is key for design, troubleshooting and exploring optimum operating conditions. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and particle modeling with Discrete Element Method (DEM) have been identified as key enabling technologies in finding solutions to many of the challenges that surround scale-up; capable of reducing operating costs across manufacturing and quality divisions. We will also talk about how CFD & DEM simulation can be integrated in to process models/process simulation tools for a deeper insight.

12:30    Welcome & Introductions/ Siemens Academic Program
12:45    Industrial Case studies of CFD & DEM: Ravi Aglave
13:15    Demostration: STAR-CCM+ WORKFLOW: Prasanna Venuvanlingam
13:30    Guest Talk: Process System Enterprises- Combining process modeling with CFD Simulation:
               Sean Birmingham
13:50    Q&A and discussions

3.   How to shape your own automation future with Digitalization | 2:30 – 5:30 PM

Digitalization is not a one-size-fits-all solution but rather a progression that varies greatly based on every company’s systems, internal processes, and automation tools. To ensure that the right digitalization option is chosen at the right time, it is imperative to gain a holistic view of an operation by answering questions related to production needs, pain points, strategic goals as well as available time and investment. One way to ensure that all aspects of a digital transformation are considered is to take a consultative approach that seeks to answer these questions with the aim of putting together a customized digitalization roadmap. Such a roadmap should go beyond standalone projects by assessing the latest developments in process control, analyzing the increasing amount of intelligence coming from smart field devices and review methods to capitalize on the information they provide. The intent is to, first and foremost, focus on implementing quick win projects with the most solid return on investment. Presented by Jonas Norinder and Charles Fialkowski.

During this presentation you will gain the following insights:

  • A general understanding of key digitalization topics such as the digital twin, 3D, simulation as well as innovative ways of collecting data
  • Learn about the importance of digital transformation
  • Reasons to consider a consulting approach to create a customized roadmap
  • What are latest developments in process control in the digital age
  • How can information and data be used to more productively operate and maintain a plant?
  • Why digital fieldbus technology is the most effective communication protocol in the digital age
