PLANO, Texas– UGS, a leading provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) products and services, today announced Andretti Green Racing -- whose cars are developed with the help of UGS® digital product development technology -- won the Indy Racing League® (IRL) IndyCar® Series Championship for the second year in a row. Andretti Green Racing driver Dan Wheldon, who broke the IndyCar Series record for the most victories in a season with six wins including the Indianapolis 500, clinched the season championship for the team this past weekend at the IRL Watkins Glen Indy Grand Prix presented by Argent Mortgage.
Andretti Green Racing uses UGS’ NX™ digital product development software for all of the design and development work the company performs on its fleet of eight race cars. Although IRL rules limit the modifications a team can make to the car body and engine, engineers still have quite a bit of leeway in other areas such as the suspension. Fine-tuning these areas often means designing and fabricating new parts in the brief interval between races.
“Winning the IRL championship two years in a row is a testament to our relentless pursuit of excellence and our ability to work together effectively as a team, and UGS is an important member of our winning team,” said Michael Andretti, CEO, Andretti Green Racing. “We rely on UGS software to help us fine tune our competitive edge through the design of critical components and to continue to transform our process of racing innovation.”
“This has been a tremendous season for Andretti Green Racing and we are all very, very proud of our win, which is a testament to the teamwork of integral partners like UGS,” said Dan Wheldon. “We intend to continue to develop our relationship with UGS and build on the success we have experienced over the years.”
“UGS congratulates Andretti Green Racing and Dan Wheldon on a record-breaking season. UGS and Andretti Green Racing share a common culture of relentlessly pursuing excellence which makes this championship even more satisfying,” said Dave Shirk, executive vice president of Global Marketing for UGS. “We are proud of our racing heritage and pleased that our technology is helping so many racing teams achieve success. We strive to help every UGS technology user drive into victory lane, on the track or in the board room.”
A Tradition of Technology and Tracks
UGS has a long tradition in providing NX digital product development software through racing sponsorships. Andretti Green Racing, along with Joe Gibbs Racing and Hendrick Motorsports (participants in the NASCAR® NEXTEL Cup Series), have been using UGS software for several years to help develop their cars and improve their performance on the race track. KB Racing, which competes in the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA), began using UGS technology in 2005, and Renault F1 Team, which is currently leading both the drivers and constructors Formula One world championships, established a partnership with UGS in 2004 and is using the Tecnomatix solution.
“NX is powerful enough to handle our most complex and challenging designs and its ease-of-use allows us to get the job done fast,” said Scott Graves, director of engineering at Andretti Green Racing. “There’s no time to waste between races and with NX we can design, modify and manufacture a part overnight and have it on the car the next morning.”
