Improving Ship Fuel Efficiency Through Connected Simulation
Is the digital twin for marine design already becoming a reality? How can it impact ship design?
Marine simulation tools have gained acceptance as part of the design process over recent years, but there is still little crossover between design teams or software tools. A connected simulation approach gives much greater understanding of ship performance and can lead to significant improvements to designs and ship efficiency. In this webinar, Wärtsilä shows how using connected software tools enables them to increase ship fuel efficiency. By directly linking 1D system simulation and 3D CFD, they increase the realism of their propulsion results and can find optimal fuel consumption for different operating scenarios.
Combining system simulations with 3D CFD simulations is the clear first step toward a digital twin for marine design. This co-simulation approach adds value by increasing the understanding of vessel performance under realistic operating conditions. Validation based on real-time measurements and monitoring data can further enhance marine simulations and increase the accuracy of the digital twin.
Norbert Bulten is the product performance manager at Wärtsliä, leading the team responsible for CFD propulsion analysis and developing high-performance marine propellers and thrusters. He has been a user of Siemens software for over 15 years, and believes firmly in marine simulation and the benefits of a digital twin for ship design.
Naval architects and marine design teams, looking to increase their use of simulation and improve the realism of their predictions. Existing users of Simcenter STAR-CCM+ can learn about the benefits of linking Simcenter Amesim to their simulations.
Simulation software, Simcenter, helps marine designers to predict multiple aspects of vessel performance, both earlier in the design phase and throughout the entire product lifecycle. Use these tools to:
CFD simulation enables you to examine vessel hydrodynamics in a virtual towing tank, faster and cheaper than physical tank tests. Simulation enables analysis of vessel performance, including propeller dynamics, at full scale and under realistic operating conditions. By linking these simulations to 1d system simulation tools you can predict the response of the propulsion system to real loads and predict fuel consumption over complete mission scenarios.
