Innovation and collaborative, synchronized program management for new programs
PLANO, Texas, September 15, 2010 - Siemens PLM Software, a business unit of the Siemens Industry Automation Division and a leading global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services, today announced that its Solid Edge® software was used by two students in two different countries to take first place in two different categories in the prestigious SkillsUSA and Skills Canada national competitions. SkillsUSA and Skills Canada are intense, school-year long educational challenges placing the best students in a variety of disciplines in competition against one another. After a series of local contests, the top students at the state and province levels qualify to compete in the national contest. Solid Edge computer-aided design (CAD) and engineering software was used by both of this year's national winners in the Technical Drafting and Mechanical CAD final competitions.

Isaac Wasilefsky took first place in the 2010 SkillsUSA Technical Drafting competition. His win followed a second place medal in 2009 in the national student event. Wasilefsky, a student at the Huntsville Center for Technology in Alabama, used Solid Edge to compete against 41 of the top mechanical design/drafting high school students from throughout the United States.
Wasilefsky and his challengers were given four hours to design a precision cut seam saw for the medical industry. After a noontime break the students were presented with an engineering change order (ECO). The ECO called for a new hardware component. This meant that the students had to create new, major sections of their existing design. The students then had just three more hours to produce and print a drawing of their new design.
Wasilefsky, who later said it was one of the most difficult problems he had ever encountered, beat all competitors using Solid Edge. Wasilefsky now attends Auburn University.
In Waterloo, Ontario, Mike Christensen represented British Columbia in the 16th Annual Skills Canada competition and contended in the Mechanical CAD category. The previous year he had taken the third-place bronze medal in the same category. Using Solid Edge, Christensen's task this year was to complete four three-hour design projects over two days. His competition was made up of some of the most promising future engineers from secondary and collegiate schools throughout Canada. In the end, contest judges awarded Christensen, and his high-quality Solid Edge-designed projects, the first place gold medal.
As a result of his first place finish, Christensen will represent Canada at the 2011 World Skills competition to be held in London, England. Christensen attends Sardis Secondary School in Chilliwack, British Columbia.
Skills Canada and SkillsUSA are a partnership of students, teachers, and industry representatives working together to ensure that Canada and the United States have a skilled work force into the future.
