Innovation and collaborative, synchronized program management for new programs
FOR RELEASE, December 8, 2003
PLANO, Texas -- UGS PLM Solutions, the product lifecycle management (PLM) subsidiary of EDS, today released details on how Solid Edge Version 15 has been enhanced for designers of consumer products. Solid Edge Version 15, the company’s industry-leading value-based 3D computer-aided design (CAD) system, is available to order immediately with first customer shipment expected this quarter.
Solid Edge Version 14 (March 2003) delivered Rapid Blue, sophisticated and flexible shape creation software, to the mainstream CAD industry. With sophisticated features developed specifically to ease the design of complex shapes prevalent in consumer products, Solid Edge has quickly been implemented by many companies in this and similar industries. With Rapid Blue, Solid Edge offers an aesthetic engineering solution for designers of consumer products with exclusive tools to optimize form, fit and function. Rapid Blue was developed to drive fast-track design iteration by providing flexibility in styling without concern for history, enabling users to Design with Insight and iterate design alternatives faster.
Version 15 continues to develop Solid Edge’s powerful shape modeling functionality with enhancements to surface trimming, patterning and curve creation. Solid Edge’s automated workflows increase productivity and manufacturing accuracy for common features such as Web networks, lips and grooves. Version 15 adds to the list of these process-specific features with new “super features"; Cooling vents are common to consumer goods and traditionally very difficult to model. With Version 15, a single command creates cooling vents, with definitions for ribs, spars, depth, rounds and draft angles. And the new “Boss 48; command creates a mounting boss (or multiple bosses) with options for stiffening ribs, mounting hole, rounds and draft angles. For Pro/ENGINEER® design software users, Version 15 offers a fast method for bulk translation of assemblies, parts and drawings from Pro/ENGINEER to Solid Edge and/or Solid Edge’s design management system, Insight. “The robustness and flexibility of the Solid Edge Rapid Blue shape creation capabilities, coupled with the value based pricing model, has generated tremendous interest in Solid Edge as a replacement for more expensive CAD products as customers seek to optimize their cost of ownership,” said Bruce Boes, vice president of Solid Edge marketing and business strategy. “Rapid Blue launched Solid Edge squarely into the heart of the consumer products industry. As we optimize Solid Edge for the consumer products market, we are able to bring the in-depth understanding of the design process that Solid Edge has always been known for thus optimizing workflows as only a product that is designed by engineers, for engineers can.”
Solid Edge Version 15 Beta Test Customers and Industry Analysts Verify Enhancements
“With Solid Edge Version 15, UGS PLM Solutions has done a great job understanding what consumer product designers need,” said Olivier Pellerin, a Version 15 beta tester with Groupe SEB (Sur Tille, France), a well-known maker of TEFAL, MOULINEX, KRUPS, ROWENTA kitchen appliance brands. “With one feature, we now can design plastic cooling vents and mounting bosses in all our kitchen a ppliances 10 times faster than before and they are just as easy to modify.” “The advancements in Version 15 extend the company’s record of deliver ing highly efficient, practical, user-focused solutions,” said Monica Schnitger, senior vice president, market analysis at Daratech Inc. in Cambridge, Mass .
UGS PLM Solutions will deliver new features for consumer product design this month with the release of Solid Edge Version 15.
