Each year, software in automobiles, motorcycles, and trucks becomes more complex. This trend is driven, in part, by relatively new advanced safety features such as ADAS (Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems) and self-driving, which are both heavily reliant on software. There are also many other classical applications in these vehicles, such as digital instrument clusters, requiring safety certification.
As a result, the automotive industry has worked with worldwide regulators to define standards for the safety of automotive systems and the software that runs on them, such as ISO 26262 (Road Vehicles - Functional Safety) and ISO 21448 (Safety of the Intended Functionality).
Safety regulators in Europe (such as the VDA in Germany) expect components in vehicles certified to drive in those countries will be required to conform to these standards to become a requirement worldwide.
Adding to the complexity is the need to use more open-source software such as Linux to enable advanced features.
As a trusted supplier to automotive OEM, Tier 1 and 2 suppliers, Siemens Embedded has the products, services, and expertise to supply certified and high-quality open-source software, backed with the necessary evidence, to be deployed in these highly demanding systems.
