A cloud backend for an IoT solution can be based on public, private, or hybrid cloud. The backend may only need a single connection to a device in order to enable telemetry data upload, or it may need tighter integration to provide device management, firmware updates, or advanced diagnostics and debug functions. The device may be connected with the cloud directly over the public Internet or it can use a gateway to enable cloud integration. The device can also use more fragmented approach where it may be integrated with different backbends for control and data functions.
Embedded IoT Framework Add-on provides flexibility to integrate devices to support various cloud backend configurations.

Some IoT solutions need a hybrid approach where they use one backend for data plane applications and a different backend for control plane to perform device management operations. Another scenario is to work with a public cloud for general functionality, but selectively harvest critical data to a private cloud. Siemens Embedded IoT solution provides the flexibility to fulfill the hybrid environment needs.
The device connectivity needs can be different depending upon if you have private instance of a cloud environment or you have a homegrown lightweight on-premise backend communicating with devices using IoT protocols. As part of Siemens IoT Solution a wide range of IoT protocol support is available out of the box, enabling devices to seamlessly integrate to on-premise cloud environments. Siemens IoT solution also comes integrated with back-end frameworks like Eclipse hawkBit™ to facilitate building lightweight on-premise device management solution.
IoT Framework Add-on integrates device or edge SDKs from leading public cloud platforms. The integration uses the API Interface provided by the cloud vendor without adding any limitation to original primitives. All services are implemented as scalable/configurable components. A reference agent provides base application that demonstrates use of available cloud IoT services. IoT Framework integrates with and complements various public clouds e.g. Microsoft® Azure®, Amazon® Web Services®, or Siemens MindSphere. The Siemens Embedded Azure cloud integration is Microsoft Azure Certified for IoT.
