CAMBERLY, U.K. -- EDS announced today that TransBus International has recently s uccessfully completed the latest phase of a product lifecycle management (PLM) s oftware implementation programme designed to streamline the companys produ ct development and manufacturing processes and to cut costs. Implemented at TransBus Internationals facilities in Guildford, Surrey, th is latest phase included the integration of EDS Teamcenter Engineering pro duct data management software suite with its Solid Edge 3D mechanical product de sign software. This has provided TransBus International with a Web-based collabo rative product development environment, which links a number of the company’ ;s sites and suppliers. TransBus International designs, engineers and manufactures bus and coach chassis , bodies and complete vehicles. It is the worlds leading manufacturer of l ightweight, low floor, easy access buses and owns the Alexander, Dennis and Plax ton brands.
Web-Based Collaboration The new EDS PLM system provides Web-based collaborative product development and manufacturing planning facilities to over 150 TransBus International employees a s well as some 15 suppliers and other TransBus engineering sites around the UK. The company implemented EDS Solid Edge mainstream 3D mechanica l CAD software at its Guildford site in 1998. This became the standard CAD softw are for the entire group in 2001, replacing the companys existing 2D draft ing-based systems from other vendors in order to improve the product development process. The softwares advanced visualisation, assembly modelling and cla sh detection capabilities were key factors here. Now, as well as providing comprehensive design revision and product data managem ent facilities to TransBus Internationals design engineers, the implementa tion of EDS Teamcenter software provides other TransBus personnel with vie w-only access, via a standard Web browser, tothe up-to-date design information they require for such tasks as cost analysis, purchasing and manufacturing planning. In addition, Teamcenter enables TransBus Internationals suppliers, as well as other TransBus sites around the UK, to view design information in a secure e nvironment and where authorised, to download 3D model data to their own systems for use in, for example, the numerical control (NC) machine tool programming pro cess for manufacturing purposes.
Financial Savings Among the benefits that the implementation of Teamcenter has brought to TransBus International are a reduction in administration costs associated with the desig n process and faster access to current design information. The combination of Solid Edge and Teamcenter has enabled us to eliminate t he reprographic costs previously incurred in distributing design information, wh ich were running at over £10,000 per year for the consumables alone, says Dave Harrowell, computer-aided engineering manager, TransBus International . Whereas before it could take anything up to two weeks to locate a drawin g among the 100,000 or so on file, print it off and deliver it to the requester, design information is now available to whoever needs it within a couple of minu tes. And thanks to Teamcenter, we know it is the latest revision level of the de sign. Further efficiencies have come from the ability of TransBus International servic e depots and suppliers to view design information via a standard Web browser, en abling engineering changes to rapidly be taken into account. In addition, the ab ility for suppliers to download design information means that those that have al so adopted Solid Edge as their CAD system have been able to reduce set-up costs for CNC manufacturing, enabling them to reduce the cost to TransBus of component s, while maintaining their own margins.
