PLANO, Texas -- UGS PLM Solutions, the product lifecycle management (PLM) subsid iary of EDS, today announced new enhancements and a new promotional package for machine design with Solid Edge Version 15. Priced at $6,495 (U.S.), the comprehensive package includes Solid Edge Classic ( with full solid modeling, surfacing, assemblies, drafting, weldments, sheet meta l, translators and design management), plus popular add-on software modules such as XpresRoute (wiring, and tubing), Feature Recognizer, Engineering Handbook an d the new Version 15 Standard Parts Library for machinery. The offer is good thr ough the end of March 2004. Since its initial release, Solid Edge has been a technical leader in machinery a nd equipment design, delivering practical, process-specific functionality to sol ve real-world problems. Unique capabilities allow for the creation and manipulat ion of massive assemblies (well over 100,000 parts) that are common in the indus try. Machine designers using Solid Edge employ powerful workflows, engineering c alculations and analysis tools that allow them to create machinery designs that are both accurate and intelligent. Solid Edge users report that physical prototy ping is virtually eliminated, and built-in data and revision management tools fa cilitate the reduction of costly errors, scrap and rework, while engineering kno wledge captured in these designs is easily re-used for faster and more accurate changes and revisions. “The outstanding success of Solid Edge in the market has long been built on a solid foundation of providing a high value-based solution to the satisfaction of its thousands of customers in the mechanical machinery market,” said Br uce Boes, vice president Solid Edge marketing and business strategy. “This new promotional offer brings together the extended Solid Edge portfolio for mach ine design, packaged into a single solution at a very attractive price that will allow more users than ever before to Design with Insight.” UGS PLM Solutions will deliver new features for machine design this quarter with the release of Solid Edge Version 15 (see Solid Edge Version 15 press release). • A new application for defining, storing and reusing standard machine compone nts such as fasteners, pins, bearings and structural members, with optional comp rehensive libraries ( see Solid Edge V15 adds CAD Partner Standard Parts Library and Man agement System).
  • Enhancements to the popular Sheet Metal design application to address overal l manufacturability by incorporating more design intent into both the 3D model a nd the flat pattern.
  • Continued enhancements of XpresRoute for tubing to deliver overall relations hip control and associativity.

Customer and Industry Analyst Comments On Solid Edge Version 15 “Version after version of Solid Edge addresses our growing needs to work on large assemblies, often containing more than 20,000 complex parts and features, ” said beta tester Fritz Holzner, CAD administrator at Maschinenbau GmbH in Siegsdorf, Germany. Functionality added in every release, including V15, allow s us to accomplish many very important tasks, such as creating complete bills of material for a product or customizing a new equally large machine without major redesign effort.” “The advancements in (Solid Edge) version15 extend the company’s record of delivering highly efficient, practical, u ser-focused solutions,” said Monica Schnitger, senior vice president of mar ket analysis at Daratech Inc.
