FOR RELEASE Wednesday, October 20, 2004
PLANO, Texas and COLOGNE, Germany - UGS, a leading global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services, today announced that international furniture manufacturer, Vitra, has selected UGS’ NX™ and Teamcenter® software and services for its locations in Germany and Switzerland.
Vitra is investing in NX and Teamcenter to simplify its data exchange and optimize the use of all product-related information. Based on results from pilot programs, by using Teamcenter®, the de facto standard for PLM, Vitra expects to save US$3.6 million within the next 5 years and significantly simplify the design process for the company. Vitra, which creates its products in close collaboration with internationally renowned designers, was searching for a powerful, integrated and reliable IT solution.
“UGS provides Vitra with detailed solutions for all of our demanding technical requirements and a powerful PLM backbone for the structured organization of our designs, development, prototypes and products,” explains Jürgen Dürrbaum, Head of Marketing International of Vitra.
In a six-month supervised pilot phase, the new solution has already revealed numerous benefits with the redesign of the famous Eames Plastic Chair and a cantilevered chair. The benefits include the exact definition and associative transfer of free-form surfaces with NX and their seamless use in generating prototypes or programming machine tools. All departments along the process chain were included in PLM workshops, where Teamcenter and the user-friendly JT format proved to ensure better, faster and more exact communications between external designers, internal staff from all departments, including distribution and service partners around the world.
”Vitra clearly demonstrates how a medium-sized company can transform its core competences into faster and more effective processes with PLM,” says Georg Wessels, managing director of UGS, Germany. “Our detailed and integrated solution builds a reliable foundation for international manufacturers.”
By the end of 2004, eight pilot workplaces will be active. Full rollout is planned for January 2005.
NX is a next-generation digital product development system that helps companies transform the product lifecycle. With the industry’s broadest suite of integrated applications, NX touches the full range of development processes in product design, engineering and manufacturing. NX allows clients to conceive, design, engineer and validate discretely manufactured products – and capture their product definitions – in a fully digital environment.
Teamcenter, the de facto standard for PLM, connects people and processes – creating, capturing and sharing product knowledge to power innovation and productivity, through an integrated portfolio of proven solutions built on Teamcenter’s open PLM foundation. Teamcenter leads the PLM industry with digital product development, engineering process management and product knowledge management solutions that deliver fast time-to-value.
JT is a common data format for enabling product visualization and information distribution and enhancing data sharing between PLM software applications. The robust functionality and lightweight nature of JT technology make it possible to view and share product data and dynamic images worldwide, in real-time and throughout all phases of the product lifecycle.
