Accurately predict multiphase flow regimes for oil and gas industry applications

In the oil and gas industry, engineers need to accurately understand and predict the physics of multiphase flow behaviors, in order to propose adequate equipment design and ensure flawless operations. Modern computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation methods help them capture complex multiphase flow behaviors in realistic simulations.

The white paper “Gaining greater value from CFD data - Speeding up high-fidelity simulations of real-world multiphase flows” looks at recent advances in multiphase modeling methods. It explains how these improvements support engineers working in the oil and gas industry, by combining multiphase models to capture phenomena such as liquid films, droplet transport, slug flows, bubbly and dispersed flow regimes.

Understanding multiphase flows and multiphase modelling approaches in CFD

Multiphase flows occur in many different flow regimes, depending on the system through which they are flowing, the flow rates (and speeds), fluid properties, and the relative volume fractions of different phases present at any point in the system. Many approaches have been developed in CFD to model the complexity of multiphase flows. These approaches and their variants are described in the white paper, including:

  • Eulerian Multiphase (EMP) model
  • Volume of Fluid (VOF) Eulerian method
  • Fluid film model
  • Lagrangian Multiphase Models
  • Discrete Element Method (DEM)
