PLANO, Texas -- UGS PLM Solutions, the product lifecycle management subsidiary of EDS, today announced its intention to support the new AMD Opteron™ processor with two of its flagship product development software solutions -- Unigraphics® NX and Parasolid®.
Unigraphics NX, one of the world's most advanced computer-aided design, manufacturing and engineering analysis (CAD/CAM/CAE) applications, will initially support the AMD Opteron processor running Microsoft's Windows XP 32-bit operating system (OS). Fully supported versions of Unigraphics NX on the AMD Opteron processor are expected to be available in early 2004. Plans are currently being developed to support Microsoft's Windows XP 64-bit OS, after its anticipated release in late 2004.
Parasolid, UGS PLM Solutions' industry leading geometric modeling kernel and the foundation for Unigraphics NX and hundreds of other CAD, CAM and CAE solutions worldwide, has been fully tested on the AMD Opteron processor in both the 32-bit and 64-bit environments, and is being made available immediately to Parasolid application developers. Fully supported Parasolid-based applications running in these environments are expected to begin shipping to end users upon availability of the appropriate Windows XP OS.
"Many of our CAD customers modeling very large assemblies are reaching the limits of 32-bit addressing," said Chris Brosz, vice president of Technical Operations, UGS PLM Solutions. "In order to continue to provide these customers with the same high levels of performance and support they are accustomed to, we believe it is important to make our product development solutions available on 64-bit platforms like the AMD Opteron processor. The Opteron's ability to run existing 32-bit Windows applications without modification, while offering a true 64-bit computing environment, will benefit customers in their migration to 64-bit computing."
