Functional models for vehicle dynamics
Shorten the design cycle using functional models for vehicle dynamics to support the introduction of new concepts and help set targets at concept stage, before axle and suspension hardpoints are defined

Using functional models for vehicle dynamics in the early concept stages shortens the design cycle. But equally important, predecessor and benchmarked competitor vehicles can serve as targets for a new vehicle before the axle and suspension hardpoints are defined.

To introduce new concepts and new possibilities early-on, automotive OEMs can’t rely on existing predefined template-based vehicle models. Simcenter tools and services offer the necessary modularity and flexibility to help explore new technologies before a virtual suspension prototype is developed and offers solutions such as variability of K&C management, unitary testing and progressive complexity.

In this webinar, Marc Alirand, Chassis System Expert at Siemens, invited Eric Boittiaux from Peugeot SA to explain how they use functional models for vehicle dynamics. Peugeot SA applied a system engineering approach for optimization, but also for testing components and their contributions to the full vehicle behavior. Additionally, they combined lateral and longitudinal models to find the best compromise between handling, vertical comfort, drivability and range.

The Peugeot SA expert demonstrates this approach based on the following examples. Firstly, how jacking effects and non-homokinetic rotation of the column are well captured by simulation to efficiently use the EPS motor torque for autonomous driving. Secondly, how hydraulic cushions are modeled to reach a high suspension comfort level in the car.

You will learn:

  • Benefit from model modularity and flexibility to pilot new designs early on
  • Set axle targets at concept stage
  • Evaluating each component and its contributions on the global vehicle behavior
