Software at the heart of future mobility

Durée estimée : 2 minutes

As the car continues its transition from a hardware driven machine to a software-driven electronics device, the auto industry’s competitive rules are being rewritten. Software is enabling critical automotive innovations driving the mega trends of autonomous, connected, electric cars and shared mobility solutions. 30% of vehicle content will be software in 2030 (McKinsey). However, as the importance of electronics and software has grown, snowballing complexity is causing significant software related quality issues, as evidenced by millions of recent vehicle recalls.

  • In 2010, vehicles had about 10 million lines of code; by 2016, this expanded to roughly 150 million lines of code (McKinsey)

  • 2017: In US market, there were 436 recall campaigns impacting 32 Million vehicles (Recall Masters)

  • 2018: In US market, there were 443 recall campaigns impacting 47 Million vehicles (Recall Masters) with 102 recalls specifically for software and electronics

  • The number of vehicles being remedied is decreasing: 39% (2017) to 31% (2018) (Recall Masters)

  • There are 76 Million vehicles on the road today in the USA with open recalls (Recall Masters)
