NEW YORK and INDIANAPOLIS, July 15, 2004 – UGS, a leading global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services, and Global University (GU) today announced an in-kind software grant designed to prepare GU’s graduates to more quickly and productively enter the corporate world.
UGS made the announcement in conjunction with its analyst/media briefing event being held July 14-15 in New York. The briefing is the first such event UGS has held since announcing on May 27 the closing of its sale by EDS to three private equity firms and its launch of operations as an independent software company under the UGS brand. UGS will provide GU with industry leading software tools for PLM with a commercial value of $119 million. The in-kind grant, made through the Global University Foundation and UGS’ GO PLM initiative, is the largest in GU’s history.
The UGS grant will allow students to gain practical experience with a full range of PLM technologies, including computer-aided design (CAD), computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), computer-aided engineering (CAE), visualization, digital manufacturing, collaboration, product data management (PDM) and engineering process management.
GU also plans to use the software in collaborative research with the Pervasive Technologies Laboratory at Indiana University, the School of Engineering and Technology at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), the Media Research Laboratory at a large international company in Indianapolis, the evolving health education content production studios at Ruth Lilly Health Education Center, the EDS Design Visualization Center and CAE-net’s Digital Theater locations in Detroit.
GU’s research plan calls for students to have simultaneous access to 3-dimensional data in specific applications for engineering, life-sciences, advanced manufacturing and other scientific courses and applications. This technology will be tested on Internet2 (I2) infrastructure connecting Ruth Lilly Health Education Center and IUPUI sites.
The first phase of GU’s research will focus on Immersive Visual Collaboration Networking (IVCN) for medical and advanced manufacturing applications – both areas where there is demand for widespread high-resolution, high-quality imaging. As a part of Phase I, GU members will collaborate visually and immersively walk through the Human Circulatory System at Ruth Lilly Health Education Center. A similar visual walk through the inside of an engine block is expected to occur at the EDS Design Visualization Center in Troy, Michigan.

GU is among a number of institutions that have received multi-million dollar software grants from UGS, including Purdue University, Michigan State University, Brigham Young University, Iowa State University and Virginia Tech University.
