Lean Enablement with Manufacturing Execution Systems and Electronic Device History Record

Lean Manufacturing, often simply, “Lean,” is a production practice that considers the expenditure of resources for any goal other than the creation of value for the end customer wasteful. For many, Lean is the set of tools that assist in the identification and steady elimination of waste (“muda”). As waste is eliminated, quality improves while production time and cost are reduced. A partial list of such tools would include: Single Minute Exchange of Dies (SMED), Value Stream Mapping, Five S, Kaizen, Kanban (pull systems), Just-In-Time (JIT), poka-yoke (error-proofing), Total Productive Maintenance and single piece flow. 

Some aspects of Lean can be employed without the assistance of a computer. Companies that employ Lean Principles in conjunction with Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), sometime referred to as Electronic Device History Records (eDHRs) in the regulated industries, have experienced even greater benefits beyond those achieved with “Manual Lean” initiatives. Using MES and eDHR, companies have greatly reduced scrap, cycle times, WIP, and inventory, simultaneously improved yields and throughput, and also reduced operating costs. Lean + MES = “Lean 2.0”
