Operational excellence in food processing through simulation

Virtually every food and beverage company is talking about innovation and digitalization. Staying ahead in the innovation race requires leveraging the advantages of digitalization in each of the three steps of the value chain: Ideation, Realization and Utilization. A common challenge in the food industry is bringing new products to market in a timely and cost-effective manner. This requires paying attention to quality during production and ensuring process efficiency by optimizing operating conditions. Computer modeling and simulation solutions--including Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and particle modeling with Discrete Element Method (DEM)--have been identified as key enabling technologies. Technologies like these are making a very big impact on many of the challenges that surround scale-up and are capable of reducing operating costs across manufacturing and quality divisions.

In this webinar we will examine the possibilities of using simulation in various food process engineering areas, explain why using simulation makes sense, and illustrate the value that can be extracted by utilizing these solutions in the engineering process. Specifically, we will:

  • Discuss fluid flow and hydrodynamic behavior in stirred vessels, dispersing gas and solids in liquids, behavior of high viscosity fluids, fluid structure interactions in mixing vessels, and optimization of process equipment.
  • Give an overview of mixing and rheology of fluids, high temperature processes (like baking and cooking), and particle flows such as roasting and coating.
  • Provide details of a use case around bottle filling processes and discuss how simulation was used to address a customer experience issue in food packaging (bottle squeeze for ketchup).
  • Discuss case studies dealing with the design of packaging equipment to optimize throughput while minimizing energy consumption.

If you are an engineer or a manager who wants to optimize current processes in ways that were never possible before, this event will help you understand the applicability of deploying simulation to achieve these objectives. If you are already using simulation in your engineering workflow, this session will demonstrate the importance of moving beyond single-point simulation in favor of rapidly and intelligently exploring a host of designs and processes, to extract the greatest value from simulation.
