SANYO Electric Co. Ltd. Implements EDS' PLM Solution For Effective Product Data Management and Faster Product Development

TOKYO -- EDS announced today that SANYO Electric Co., Ltd. Home Appliances Compa ny, Motor Applied Products Division, working jointly with SANYO Electric Softwar e Co., Ltd., has implemented EDS’s Teamcenter™ product lifecycle manag ement (PLM) software solution to streamline its product development process. The Motor Applied Products Division of SANYO Electric Co., Ltd., Home Appliances Company specializes in planning, developing, manufacturing and servicing small- sized, applied motor products. It is especially known as a pioneer in circulatio n type, reduced exhaust vacuum cleaners. Understanding the importance of total p roduct management and the sharing of product information (including information from heterogeneous design and development systems), the division recognized a ne ed to employ a product data management (PDM) system. After evaluating several sy stems, it selected EDS’ Teamcenter to share product information, create an integrated bill of materials (BOM), streamline approval workflow and move from p aper drawings to digital data management. “Products such as vacuum cleaners contain numerous parts, so maintaining ro bust response performance against increasing parts structure information is cruc ial,” said Kazuyuki Yamaguchi, of the Motor Applied Products Division of SA NYO Electric Co., Ltd., Home Appliances Company. “In addition, the ability to associate with existing systems and accommodate customization was important in our choice of vendor. We believe that Teamcenter, with the world’s large st PDM implementation in production, offers reliable proven technology, deep exp erience and crucial industry expertise.” The company began realizing benefits from the first phase of the Teamcenter impl ementation in July, 2002. During this first phase, the goal was to use Teamcent er to associate, integrate and manage product information from existing systems including 2D data from CADRA, 3D CAD data from SolidWorks, product planning, cost accounting, mold data, and target cost systems, as well as an existing BOM system. With Teamcenter in place, design engineers are now able to effectively capture a nd leverage complete product information for more cost-effective product develop ment and faster time to market. In the past, employees in procurement, quality m anagement and manufacturing had to contact each product division individually wh en they needed product information. Teamcenter provides for immediately access t o information on any product from a single source, driving efficiency and speed. Moving forward, Sanyo plans to use Teamcenter to create workflow approvals, 3D d ata management that meets with ISO requirements, and to associate Teamcenter wit h its own design know-how data base to leverage its existing knowledge and exper iences for future product development. “In the beginning, we worried that a PDM implementation might cause an incr ease in our design engineers’ workload,” said Kazuyuki Yamaguchi. &#14 7;We sought a system to streamline processes rather than complicate them.
