Australian Navy Adopts EDS' Teamcenter® Aerospace and Defence Solutions

MELBOURNE, Australia -- The Australian Department of Defence will soon be using product life-cycle management software developed by leading global services company, EDS, to monitor and manage the configuration of Navy ships during their operational service life.

EDS' Teamcenter Aerospace and Defense software will be used to identify, control and report on the configured parts of a Navy ship -- from the smallest repairable unit to the most complex systems. The information can then be used to effectively manage the lifecycle of the ship using EDS' Teamcenter product data management capabilities, including workflow and document management.

EDS' distributor in Australia, Product Lifecycle Management Australasia (PLMA), will be responsible for implementing the technology. David Willison, managing director, PLMA, said, "Importantly, the Teamcenter technology is able to collect existing data, including design information and inventories, and marry this information with on-board maintenance and inventory systems to monitor the lifecycle state of each ship."

This means that when a component has been or needs to be replaced, Teamcenter is able to provide necessary information on dependent components, simplifying the change process. Using automatic prompts and Web-enabled applications, it provides instant, up-to-date configuration status information. It controls complex workflows by alerting the right people, at the right time, to the particular needs of a job. "The result is a more efficient process that conforms to the stringent requ irements of managing change to a ships configuration," said Mr Willison.

Teamcenter Aerospace and Defense is an extension of EDS' popular Teamcenter Enterprise product, but developed specifically for the defence industries. "It is already being used by the United States Navy and by aerospace leaders, such as Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman, but this will be the first time that the vertical application of Teamcenter is used in Australia," said Mr Willison. "It is applicable to the configuration management of any large vessel -- fast frigates, mine hunters or submarines. We can also see it being used by the Army and Air Force."

According to Barry Tregidgo, general manager - Defence & Enterprise Solutions, PLMA, Teamcenter offers service improvements over existing software. "The technology will replace the old legacy system, which required the ship's designers and maintenance crews to manually record and check ships' inventory -- a process that was time consuming and costly. Teamcenter will give a quick picture of a ship configuration, simplifying the way information can be recorded, retrieved and used," said Mr Tregidgo.

The Anzac System Program Office will be the first Navy office to apply the technology. However, Mr Willison said the technology has direct application to any configured item used in defence. "In a highly competitive market, we see this decision as having significant long-term value to our wider business. It is a strong endorsement of Teamcenter and our lifecycle management products," said Mr Willison.
