Solid Edge From EDS Launches New Evolve To 3D Program

PLANO, Texas - EDS today announced a new, simple four-step program for manufact urers still using 2D design systems to evolve to 3D design and its inherently higher levels of productivity and corporate profitability. The Evolve to 3D program leverages new functionality built into EDS's Solid Edge computer-aided design (CAD) system. While many thousands of 2D designers have successfully made the move, industry analysts estimate that there are still hundreds of thousands more 2D users who have not made the 3D productivity leap. Many 2D users want, in principle, to work in 3D, but fear that the cost and disruption of change would prevent them getting their job done, said Peter Thorne, director of consulting with Cambashi Limited, a global supplier of in formation on the application of Information Technology to industry, based in the United Kingdom. Previous offers from the CAD Industry have not convinced them that the benefits outweigh the risks they perceive in change. Cambashi researched migration trends and has published a series of three white papers o n the topic that address concerns of senior executives, product development mana gement and design engineers. For more information on the white papers, see http://www.solidedge.com/solutions/evolve3d/.

Solid Edge Version 14's new 2D layout capability, along with well-documented 2D-to-3D migration wizards and its powerful 2D drafting application, form a powerful hybrid 2D/3D system, which is now positioned to offer 2D users an alternate way to move to 3D. We have learned a lot from the thousands of Solid Edge users who successfu lly made the transition, said Dan Staples, director of the Solid Edge business unit at EDS. We now understand how to alleviate migration concerns by showing prospects how to use existing skills and learn as they go; evolving to 3D on their owntime scale, with a completely new Hybrid 2D/3D approach to design.

Solid Edge's Four Easy Steps To 3D

Step 1 - Get the job done today, while moving to 3D at your own pace. Pro tect investment in 2D designs by converting them to Solid Edge with efficient tr anslation wizards and use the exceptional Solid Edge 2D drafting capabilities.

Step 2 - Quickly turn simple 2D geometry into intelligent, real 3D p arts by using the Solid Edge 2D to 3D migration wizard.

Step 3 - Apply the power of the new Solid Edge hybrid 2D/3D design workfl ow. Create assembly layouts (as well as parts) for new designs, using familiar 2D concepts, adding 3D as you progress. Harness Solid Edge's associative power, by driving 3D part configurations directly from 2D layouts. Solid Edge provides a true hybrid 2D/3D workflow that puts users firmly in control of the proces s that makes the most sense for their business.

Step 4 Move to full 3D design when ready and make use of the workf lows learned and the data created to move to the productive world of solid model ing.

Our four-step approach allows companies to move gradually to 3D, said Staples. These new Solid Edge users can gain impressive benefits from 3D as they establish their own natural optimized 2D/3D hybrid workflows, without experiencing the disruption of radical design process realignment of design proce sses required by most 3D modeling systems. EDS estimates that 400,000 2D users will migrate to 3D over the next two years, and Cambashi's Thorne recognizes the fit with the company’s strategy. EDS is directly addressing the concerns of prospective converts to 3D by o ffering a 4-step roadmap, and backing this up with a Hybrid 2D/3D approach to the use of Solid Edge. This initiative should prompt many current 2D users to tran sition to 3D with Solid Edge.

The Solution

Solid Edge from EDS is powerful 3D CAD software that allows manufacturing companies to Design with Insight and to reduce time to market, improve quality and lower cost. The exclusive Solid Edge Insight technology embeds design management capabilities directly within CAD, providing insight into design intent to the entire organization and enhancing collaboration.
