TOKYOand PLANO, Texas -- UGS, a leading global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services, today announced studentsof The University of Tokyoparticipating inthe Student Formula SAE Competition of Japanwill use a Formula SAE racing car designed with UGS’Solid Edge® software. The competition isto be held in Twin Ring Motegi from August30to September 2, 2004.
‘The University of Tokyo Formula Factory’,a team of students from ‘A-D Production of A Formula Racing Car’ class led by associate professor Kohei Kusaka ofDesign Engineering Laboratory, have managedthe entire production process for the car, from planning, designing and production to testing and improvement. Solid Edge -- UGS’industry-leading, value-based 3D computer aided design (CAD) system for the mainstream PLM market --enhanced this process by providing the team with the ability to design and develop theframe, suspension, power train and structural components in 3D.
Formula SAE competitions are designed to test students’ knowledge, creativity and imagination, with evaluations based on design technology along with race times. TheUniversityof Tokyoteam took third place honors atitsfirst competition last year.
The Student Formula SAE Competition of Japan aims to develop the skills of students who will form the engineering cornerstone of Japanese industry in the future and to provide an opportunity for the students to take part in practical object creation exercises. The competition was planned as the Japanese version of the Formula SAE held in the U.S.
Two hundred seats of Solid Edge were deployed atThe University ofTokyo inApril 2002. The softwareisimplemented throughout the curriculum oftheDesign Engineering Laboratory where studentsspend one and a half yearsin design and drafting courses, learningfoundational design and draftsmanship through practical application of 3D modeling, rapid prototyping and machining.
