Experts in education

Chuvash State University (Chuvash State), named after famed Russian educator I.N. Ulyanov, is the largest scientific, educational, and research center in Russia’s Chuvash Republic. The multidisciplinary institution trains and educates students in 29 groups of specialization. The university employs over 1,000 educators and boasts more than 19,000 students from 69 regions of the Russian Federation and countries from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Chuvash State promotes the professional development of engineering, technical, and other specializations for federal projects.

The university’s educational mission is to prepare students whose skills are in demand by Chuvash Republic enterprises and other regions for Industry 4.0. To facilitate this process, Chuvash State develops strategic partnerships in the local business community and with innovative manufacturing companies. The university has also built the Cheboksary Engineering Center for Automotive and Agricultural Engineering (CEC AAE), paid in part by the Russian Federation’s Ministry of Education and Science.

Response to modern industry requirements

Optimizing production processes and reducing the time-to-market for new products while maintaining quality and reliability is a necessity in the mechanical engineering industry. Businesses use high-tech software to meet this requirement, which enables the full-scale digital transformation of production processes and supports the entire product lifecycle. At the onset of Industry 4.0, more Russian businesses are switching to solutions from Siemens Digital Industries Software, where today meets tomorrow. These companies prefer to hire advanced, technology-savvy employees who do not need professional retraining or additional training.

Chuvash State realizes labor market requirements and strives to meet this demand. This not only aligns with the university’s main strategy (preparing specialists that are in high demand) but also provides new opportunities to cooperate with the region’s core companies. The university’s mechanical engineering faculty has purchased Siemens academic licenses to train engineers to work with modern product lifecycle management (PLM) and computer-aided design (CAD) systems. Students that master this software can quickly learn how to work in other systems in any industry.

Siemens products meet the latest mechanical engineering design standards. With toplevel CAD systems, engineers can configure and control a significant number of parameters when designing complex products such as welding machines, vehicles, spacecraft, or aircraft.

Siemens offers a comprehensive suite of solutions for companies wanting to manufacture complex high-tech products with long service life. This software also provides the following advantages:

  • High-quality input data for the enterprise resource planning (ERP) system
  • A unified development environment for designers and process engineers
  • Digital documentation and paperless workflows
  • Continuous management of all product lifecycle stages, from proof of concept to phase-out and end of service
  • Integration of information, systems, processes and employees

Chuvash State prefers Siemens because its product portfolio covers most of the processes that modern engineers deal with, including CAD, PLM, computer-aided engineering (CAE), and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) systems.

“The market requires professionals who have mastered the CAD/CAM/CAE/PLM systems used in modern business practices,” says Vladimir Grigoriev, Head, Cheboksary Engineering Center for Transport and Agricultural Engineering, Chuvash State. “To prepare sought-after specialists, the university needs to train students to use cuttingedge solutions. This was one of the main reasons why we chose Siemens Digital Industries Software. We also needed commercial vendor licenses because our engineers develop competitive mechanical engineering designs for our customers.”

PLM training for engineers

Chuvash State’s mission is to provide students with the most contemporary educational program and strengthen its reputation as an institution whose graduates have in-demand, ready-to-work skills. A graduate of the Chuvash State mechanical engineering program is equipped to work with any level of software, master structural analysis methods, and knows how to work with new software products.

Siemens supports the development of the technical potential of universities, both in terms of equipping them and transforming educational programs to meet modern industry standards. As part of the Siemens academic program, Chuvash State received NX™ CAD software, NX™ CAM software, Solid Edge® software, Teamcenter® software, the Tecnomatix® portfolio, Simcenter™ software and Simcenter™ Amesim™ software. The capabilities of these solutions are equivalent to those used by global industrial companies and students can master the full production lifecycle, from building a 3D model of the product to transferring it to the plant to commissioning.

With Siemens’ assistance, Chuvash State has developed handbooks, manuals and a curriculum for a course on PLM solutions.

“We see genuine interest on the part of our students,” says Viktor Gartfelder, Dean, Mechanical Engineering Department, Chuvash State. “They like to master new tools and visualize the work results. The students are encouraged that their experiments can go beyond the lab. They will face similar professional challenges in actual work and will be ready to solve them.

“Siemens Digital Industries Software offers many tools to support our students’ creativity. When novices design models, they see different ways to achieve the goal, learn how to compare them, and choose the best one. The synchronous technology in Solid Edge allows you to discover the steps that have improved a model’s performance the most. This develops the analytical skills of future professionals.”

Chuvash State students use Siemens’ tools for 3D modeling, CAE, product performance modeling, and design documentation development. They have received solutions used by high-level industry professionals to write term papers and thesis works meeting real industry requirements.

Another reason why the university decided to implement courses on new technologies was its cooperation with Concern Tractor Plants, a leading Russian machine building company and the country’s largest tractor manufacturer. Since Concern Tractor Plants switched to Siemens products in 2014, Chuvash State needed to train specialists to be proficient with this software. The university received a Solid Edge academic license and began teaching students the solution. When Concern Tractor Plants began using NX, the university acquired licenses for this software.

Due in part to successful work with Siemens’ academic licenses, Chuvash State established an in-house engineering center that designs and creates complex and unique models for the automotive and transportation and agricultural industries.

From theory to practice: Engineering center operation

The decision to establish the Cheboksary Engineering Center for Automotive and Agricultural Machine Engineering (CEC AAME) was supported by the head of the Chuvash Republic and a Chuvash State senior official. In 2016, the university won the open all-Russian competition from the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia on the creation and development of engineering centers.

The public grant made it possible to equip the center with Siemens software and other necessary equipment. Concern Tractor Plants, one of the largest heavy mechanical engineering companies in the world, became the project’s technological partner.

The Cheboksary Engineering Center specializes in creating innovative models of vehicles and power electronics, as well as industrial and agricultural solutions. With Siemens products, the center provides a full range of engineering services that meet modern industry trends and reduces the cost of innovation for the center’s customers.

Siemens provides the center’s specialists with a unified development environment to improve CAD and CAE methods. They can quickly solve applied mechanical engineering problems, increase the center’s competitiveness, and bring it closer to regional market leadership.

First successes and development prospects

The Cheboksary Engineering Center fosters innovation in the fundamental research and development (R&D) chain, from applied R&D, to experimental design, to pilot production and, finally, to commercial implementation. It also promotes the training of qualified personnel, employment of young specialists and international cooperation.

The center’s specialists pay special attention to the development of state-of-the-art production methods in the agricultural engineering and power electronics industries. An example of a successful project in this sector is a unique friction stir welding machine designed with Siemens software. As the center specializes in the creation of non-serial, one-off products, the implementation of this project contributes significantly to the industry’s development and increases the range of products exported from Russia.

Many machine-building companies are actively modernizing their production shops and lines. This requires modeling the building and/or adding new facilities. The Cheboksary Engineering Center plans to use Tecnomatix to precisely plan the location of the equipment, warehouses and transportation routes, perform virtual commissioning and in turn save time and money for the customer. The center’s specialists are also working to improve product quality, both from the technical and aesthetical points of view. To design models with complex geometry, smooth and correct faces, the center’s specialists study the advanced functions of NX CAD. Chuvash State also plans to expand its use of Simcenter software for engineering analysis.

Siemens provides Chuvash State with the necessary updates and technical support. The delivery of academic and commercial licenses to the university has become an important step in the development of their business relationship.
