Generative design is one aspect of additive manufacturing's immense potential that has been realized. With the ability of additive manufacturing to produce parts with highly complex geometry, tools like topology optimization have come into their own.
Design space exploration is a method of automatically generating and comparing multiple designs runs to find an ideal “best fit solution. HEEDS is a design space exploration solution that can use NX CAD geometry and Simcenter CAE simulation together to generate multiple versions of a part from which a set of “best fit” designs are extracted. This allows a designer to quickly iterate through hundreds or thousands of possible optimized designs. The end result is a truly optimized solution, that can then be 3D printed. Learn more
Siemens has capitalized on the strong fluid flow analysis capabilities in our Star-CCM+ product to apply that technology to topology optimization. The result is a system that can optimize part geometry for efficient fluid flow. Using this process, companies can optimize their fluid systems to normalize flow between multiple outlets and to direct the flow through a duct system in the most efficient manner possible. Topology Optimization is a process that uses traditional CAE techniques along with special mathematics to optimize a part for performance. When optimizing for strength, the designer provides a set of inputs including the allowable design envelope, load conditions, material characteristics, and constraints. The system then uses those inputs and generates an optimized part geometry. When paired with AM, topology optimization can result in parts that meet strength requirements while minimizing material usage, weight, and other characteristics. Learn more
