UGS’ PLM Components Power Latest Release of Reverse Engineering Software from INUS Technology

PLANO, Texas - UGS Corp., a leading global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services, and INUS Technology Inc. today announced that UGS’ Parasolid® geometric modeling kernel software and D Cubed 2D Dimensional Constraint Manager (2D DCM) sketch solving component software are the foundation of a new parametric CAD capability in the recently released rapidformXO™ Redesign reverse engineering system from INUS Technology.

A key innovation in rapidformXO Redesign is the use of standard solid and surface modeling workflows and user interface (UI) that are instantly familiar to all CAD engineers by implementing the highly advanced technology of Parasolid and the 2D DCM internally. To create a fully parametric solid and surface model, engineers extract the design intent and parameters from the scan data of the physical part. Designers and manufacturers now have both the freedom and flexibility to handcraft, from scratch, a real world part and even “reverse” the traditional design-manufacturing flow back to a proper CAD model.

Similar to other reverse engineering applications, rapidformXO Redesign derives meshes and surfaces from the point clouds that are generated by the process of scanning physical objects. The use of Parasolid and the 2D DCM enables an extension to this work-flow whereby parametric solid models can be generated quickly and easily from the mesh and surface data. Initially, rapidformXO Redesign helps the user to identify mesh and surface elements that can be converted into parametric sketches using the 2D DCM. Parasolid is then used to extrude, sweep or rotate the sketches into parametric 3D solids, as well as offering a wide range of other sophisticated modeling operations, such as shelling and filleting. Using Parasolid and the 2D DCM dramatically enhances the reverse engineering process by providing designers and engineers with the capability to rapidly convert scan data into fully parametric CAD models.
