Innovation and collaborative, synchronized program management for new programs
PLANO, Texas, February 19, 2002 - EDS reported today that ALSTOM Power UK Ltd. has selected Unigraphics knowledge-based engineering software from EDS. ALSTOM Power, located in Lincoln, UK, is a leader in the development, manufacture and packaging of industrial gas turbines. Unigraphics is ALSTOM Power’s software system of choice for integrating the design and development of its turbines as well as the ancillary equipment required for their on-site installation. The Q4 2001 contract, terms of which were not disclosed, provides for Unigraphics software and implementation services.
ALSTOM Power also uses I-man product data management (PDM) software from EDS PLM Solutions. The combined solutions enable a concurrent engineering approach to product development that will allow ALSTOM Power to reduce costs and shorten the time needed to move a project from initial layout, through detailed design and manufacture to on-site installation and commissioning.
"Until now, the design of the turbine itself and the ancillary equipment required for its on-site installation such as the structural steelwork, piping and ducting, have been separate activities carried out by diverse teams using different software systems," said Alan Walker, IS business projects manager for ALSTOM Power in Lincoln. "The Unigraphics software will enable us to integrate these activities under a ’master model’ approach, so that all our engineers have one comprehensive 3D master model for various phases of a project."
In addition to the master model approach to product development, Unigraphics also provides ALSTOM Power with advanced knowledge-based engineering tools that all ow users to capture expert knowledge from designs through a process called Knowl edge Drive Automation (KDA). In particular, ALSTOM Power plans to incorporate standardized, easy-to-follow Process Wizards and Assistants, through a specific KDA technology built into Unigraphics called Knowledge Fusion.
This technology will enable users to quickly and easily develop their own engineering process-specific automated applications. Walker adds, "We see EDS’ Knowledge Fusion technology playing an important role in our overall product development environment. It will enable us to capture the specifics of a particular design engineering process a single time, encode them within Unigraphics, and then make them available for re-use whenever required during the design and development phases of any of our projects."
"We are proud that ALSTOM Power in Lincoln has again selected Unigraphics to help further streamline its product development and manufacturing processes," said John Hurley, president, UK and Ireland sales and support operations, EDS PLM Solutions. "We see this as testament to the high quality of both our software and our support services in the past and into the future."
Unigraphics is a fully integrated CAD/CAM/CAE software suite addressing the entire product development process, from conceptual and industrial design, through functional engineering design and analysis, to manufacturing. Unigraphics incorporates Predictive Engineering technology -- which combines design optimization techniques with product and process knowledge-based engineering -- to dramatically improve productivity in industries like automotive, aerospace, machinery, consumer products, medical instruments and tooling. Using Unigraphics, manufacturing companies can capture expert knowledge in their product designs through a process called Knowledge Driven Automation (KDA), which builds on Unigraphics’ Predictive Engineering foundation. Knowledge Fusion, a KDA technology, enables users to develop company-specific applications and control Unigraphics objects via rules that extend well beyond the geometric definition of a product. For example, rules could be related to manufacturing costs, performance limits or aesthetic qualities. The resulting product design could be optimized based on one or more rules and calculations could include goal-seeking iterations. Undergoing continual development, Unigraphics has been one of the industry’s top-rated CAD/CAM/CAE applications for 25 years. It is used to improve productivity in the design-through-manufacturing processes at many of the world’s most respected companies including General Motors, Boeing, 3M, Jaguar Racing, Dyson, BAE Systems and JCB.
