PLANO, Texas -- EDS today announced that several of its Solid Edge® computer -aided design (CAD) customers are extending its unique Insight design management technology into their computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) processes for sheet me tal to obtain significant productivity results. The companies are implementing a new version of MetaCAM from MetaMation Inc. tha t allows them to automatically manage not just their CAD files, but also their C AM data. Built on Microsofts SharePoint, Solid Edges exclusive, built-in Insi ght technology seamlessly embeds design management into the design process. Insi ght provides secure vaulting of distributed product data -- CAD models and drawi ngs, related documents, and information about them -- to help design teams quick ly and easily find, manage, and re-use engineering information. Now with MetaCAM Version 5.0, a Solid Edge Voyager Program application, design t eams can also manage their CAM data in the same efficient, productive way. MetaC AM files created from Solid Edge CAD files are associative within the managed In sight/SharePoint workspace. We will dramatically reduce manufacturing errors because our CAM files are now managed in the same workspace as the CAD files we use to manufacture our sh eet metal products, said Ryan Gudorf, a Solid Edge user and MetaCAM 5.0 be ta tester from Budde Sheet Metal Works Inc. in Dayton, Ohio. If I open a C AM file that was created from a Solid Edge CAD file that has been redesigned, I will now be flagged that the CAM file is no longer up to date with the Solid Edg e file and I may want to update the CAM file before I proceed to manufacture the part. This will help ensure that we will never produce an out-of-date part. 8; MetaMations enabling of the SharePoint based Insight comes in addition to other major integration with Solid Edge. MetaCAM can now extract and import Soli d Edge sheet metal files or even Solid Edge assemblies directly. The files are automatically created, saved and checked into the managed SharePoint/Insig ht space as native MetaCAM PDG files. The added beauty of this new integration, Gudorf said, is that not only is the flat pattern geometry automatically extracted and saved, but al so other critical properties in the design file that we had to enter manually, s uch as CNC machine, material type, sheet thickness and any other custom informat ion we want. Gudorf reported significant productivity increases in addition to the eliminatio n of manufacturing errors. We have reduced what used to take thousands of mouse clicks and eight hours of time down to 10 mouse clicks that take about one minute, Gudorf said. The Solid Edge Voyager Program has been the perfect vehicle for developing this new highly productive interoperability with some of the best sheet metal d esigners in the world, said Robert Scott, president of MetaMation. T his level of intelligent integration into CAD/CAM is what OEM and job shop manuf acturers have been wanting to see for years. Through the Voyager Program and Me taCAMs innovative platform, we can now offer a true state-of-the-art solut ion The Voyager Program has allowed us to provide a level of integration that delivers not only time savings, but also a bridged gap from design to manufactur ing to eliminate errors, said Rich Kazebee, chief technical officer at Met aMation. Using traditional methods such as a simple OLE transfer, or DXF f ile translation, information such as material, thickness and customer name, must be re-entered in the CAM system, which leaves room for errors. Our integration with Solid Edge eliminates this problem. This is a perfect example of how the Solid Edge Voyager Program works so w ell, said Mark Davies, manager of the Solid Edge Voyager Program, EDS PLM Solutions. At the suggestion and request of Solid Edge users, MetaMation d eveloped an incredible implementation and integration between Solid Edge and MetaCA M in a very short period of time. MetaMation joined the program just six months ago and has elevated itself to one of our premier Certified Select members.” ;
