Solid Edge Computer-Aided Design Contest Winners Announced By EDS PLM Solutions

PLANO, Texas -- EDS PLM Solutions today announced the winners of its third-quart er Solid Edge® computer-aided design (CAD) contest, highlighting excellence in mechanical engineering from all corners of the globe. Open to designers worki ng on more than 150,000 Solid Edge seats around the world, the contest is held t o promote the mechanical design excellence delivered by users of 3D solid modeli ng technology. Non-Destructive Testing System Design Taking first place honor in the Americas was R/D Tech in Quebec City, Quebec, Ca nada. Robert L’Heureux used Solid Edge to design the METAR bracelet used to measure the thickness and inspect feeding tubes of CANDU nuclear reactors. The motorized bracelet moves forward and backward and enables ultrasound inspections of the tubes. The bracelet moves through elbows and is equipped with a camera a nd a light for the dark areas. Support for R/D Tech is provided by Solid Edge va lue-added reseller Mobius Technologies in St-Romuald, Quebec, Canada. Judges were particularly impressed with the speed at which R/D Tech was able to model a complete non-destructive testing system (including the bracelet). The de sign was completed in half the time of previous similar designs and with a dram atic reduction in design errors when using its previous CAD tool. Electro-Mechanical Design of ATM Machines First place honors in Asia-Pacific went to Chungho ComNet Co. Ltd in Seoul, Sout h Korea. Design Manager Kim Byung Chul used Solid Edge to design an advanced aut omatic teller machine (ATM). The ComNet 8000 series ATMs can cash or deposit che cks, pay bills and purchase stamps. The ATM also can issue credit cards and even t and airline tickets. Chungho ComNet has been a Solid Edge user since 2000 and is designing products with as many as 3,000 parts each. Judges singled out Chungho ComNet’s ATM as a quality implementation of mult iple Solid Edge capabilities for electro-mechanical assembly design, design mana gement, the use of engineering aids, 2D drafting and process-specific sheet meta l design. Specialty Vehicle Cleans the World’s Beaches Bernd Junginger, Roland Weidmann, and Andreas Winter at Kaessbohrer Gelaendefahr zeug AG in Laupheim, Germany, designed a new beach-cleaning vehicle with Solid E dge. The design took first place in the Europe, Middle East and Africa zone. Wit h articulated steering and the additional rear wheel steering, the two-seat Beac hTech Marina brings new standards of agility for cleaning beaches. The vehicle r akes, screens and cleans to pick up even the tiniest waste particles such as cig arette stubs, pieces of broken glass, etc. The company is the global leader in b each maintenance and cleaning. Kaessbohrer Gelaendefahrzeug has been using Solid Edge since 2000 and has implemented 26 licenses of the software. Solid Edge jud ges selected the Kaessbohrer Gelaendefahrzeug design project for its elegant inc lusion of several new complex mechanical assemblies within the vehicle. “These design projects illustrate perfectly why Solid Edge continues to gro w in one of the more challenging economic periods in our history,” said Bru ce Boes, Solid Edge vice president of global marketing and business strategy. &# 147;Our community of users develop market-leading products by designing with Ins ight, reducing time to market, improving quality and lowering costs.” Each winner receives a CadMan 3D motion controller from Solid Edge Voyager Progr am member 3Dconnexion, a Logitech company.
