Innovation and collaborative, synchronized program management for new programs
PLANO, Texas -- UGS PLM Solutions, the product lifecycle management (PLM) subsidiary of EDS, today announced the successful implementation of its flagship Teamcenter product lifecycle management (PLM) solution on the Define and Control Airplane Configuration/Manufacturing Resource Management (DCAC/MRM) project in Boeing Commercial Airplanes. With the implementation of Teamcenter, Commercial Airplanes controls product configuration for the 737, 747, 757, 767, and 777 airplanes on one collaborative platform accessible to more than 25,000 globally distributed users.
"The success of this implementation was a critical component of the Boeing plan," said Ron Trout, Director of the DCAC/MRM program in Commercial Airplanes. "We had significant DCAC/MRM objectives of reducing lifecycle costs, reducing defects, and speeding time to production, which drove very demanding requirements of our solution provider. Teamcenter met our stringent functionality, openness, and scalability needs, and was a key factor in helping us achieve all of our objectives."
Commercial Airplanes' DCAC/MRM project focused on ways to rethink and radically simplify processes related to airplane configuration, definition, and production. Prior to starting the project, essential product information was stored in hundreds of legacy systems. Until access to this information was simplified and consolidated, other lean initiatives and modern inventory management processes could not be implemented. Teamcenter has provided Commercial Airplanes with one single source of product definition (SSPD) so product configuration data is available in one reliable, accurate, current, and complete system. With the successful implementation of Teamcenter as the SSPD, Commercial Airplanes converted the configuration authority to DCAC/MRM and ended reliance on manual process -- some of which had been in place since the early 1940s. For the 737 alone, this meant migrating 12.9 million records into Teamcenter. All airplanes, each with up to four million parts, are now completely under Teamcenter control when they ship from Boeing.
"It is always gratifying to work closely with world-class organizations like Boeing Commercial Airplanes to meet their challenging business objectives," said Tony Affuso, president and CEO of UGS PLM Solutions. "Commercial Airplanes has always been a market leader, and a visionary organization. We are proud to have been involved in helping them tackle one of the world's larges t process reengineering effort by leveraging the power of Teamcenter, the world's leading PLM solution."
Because Teamcenter provides the SSPD for the 737, 747, 757, 767, and 777 programs, anyone at Commercial Airplanes needing information about airplane configuration now has access to that data in one single system. As a result, designers, engineers, marketing and purchasing personnel, contractors, and managers working in globally distributed teams have access to Teamcenter. The implementation at Commercial Airplanes is considered to be the largest and most complex product data management implementation in the world.
"We can connect tens of thousands of employees at multiple sites worldwide to accurate BOM data in real time," said Nancy Bailey, Boeing Commercial Ai rplanes Director of PDM Product & Services. "Using this system ensures that we get the right parts to the right place at the right time every time."
