Innovation and collaborative, synchronized program management for new programs
LIVONIA,Mich.-- UGS PLM Solutions, the product lifecycle management (PLM) subsidiary of EDS, today announced it is providing a PLM software grant with a commercial value of $8.9 million to Utica Community Schools. The grant is scheduled to be presented today during a reception and demonstration for Utica Community Schools representatives at UGS PLM Solutions’InnovationCenterinLivonia,Mich.
The PLM software will be used by Utica Community Schools’ Career & Technical Education Department to provide project-based education that reflects real-life product design and development challenges. Student teams will simulate actual industry practice by collaboratively designing, building and assessing products using the same PLM software and methodologies employed by today’s leading global manufacturers. The software includes Teamcenter, a portfolio of lifecycle management solutions, Solid Edge, a 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) and design management application and Unigraphics NX, a comprehensive 3D modeling system that provides product design, analysis and manufacturing capabilities.
We are excited by the opportunities this grant offers, said Utica Community Schools Career & Technical Education Director Pamela Schaffer. Utica Community Schools is located in the heart of engineering country. By providing access to the same software tools used by the companies that surround us, we will be able to give students the technical skills and process knowledge that will prepare them for eventual employment by top companies locally and globally. Furthermore, since UGS PLM Solutions is the leading supplier of PLM software in the automotive industry, this grant enhances our ability to expand our local industry partnership for the benefit of our teachers and students.
This is an excellent opportunity for our students to gain real life experience while still in high school, said Dr. Joan C. Sergent, Superintendent of Schools-Utica Community Schools. This grant also underscores the need for a strong technology-based curriculum in our school district. This partnership allows students to directly relate their studies in mathematics, science, English, art, CAD and other core subject areas to the professional world of product development, marketing and sales. Educational technology systems of the kind our residents have supported over the years as part of our bond issues will continue to provide our students with 21st Century skills now and into the future.
UCS has created exceptional programs to increase awareness of career opportunities and to advance education in design, engineering and related fields, said Ed Arlin, executive vice president of UGS PLM Solutions Global GM Account. We are very pleased to be able to support these programs through this in-kind grant. We have been especially impressed with Utica Community Schools commitment to developing programs in partnership with industry, thereby providing students with the practical work skills they will need to succeed in the work force. In today’s global economy, manufacturers compete on the basis of time to market, product cost, quality and innovation. Students must have the opportunity to gain experience with technology that supports these objectives.
The software grant is being provided through UGS PLM Solutions’ Global Strategic Partnership program, which serves more than 7,600 partners globally including such top-rated institutions as theUniversityofMichigan;MichiganStateUniversity, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology,StanfordUniversityandPurdueUniversity.
