UGS Names Solid Edge Design Contest Winners

PLANO, Texas– UGS, a leading global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services, today announced the winners of its second quarter 2004 Solid Edge® computer-aided design (CAD) contest.

A drill-hammer design from Europe; the world’s first and only constant velocity joint with no load bearing sliding surfaces from Asia; a large crane assembly from the Americas; and a drive for an underwing aircraft flap from a university in France took top honors.  Each of these products was designed using Solid Edge technology.

“With the ever increasing level of design complexity spawned by the current economic upswing, the innovative use of Solid Edge is a common trait shared by these users and the Solid Edge user community in general,” said Bruce Boes, vice president of global marketing and business strategy, Solid Edge.  “Product development at this level places these and thousands of other Solid Edge users at the forefront of increased market share, revenues and profitability.”

The Solid Edge contest highlights excellence in mechanical engineering and is open to designers working on any of more than 200,000 Solid Edge seats deployed around the world.  The contest is held to promote the mechanical design excellence delivered by users of 3D solid modeling technology.

AsiaPacific

In Asia Pacific, the top design came from Trang Imagineering in Orange, Australia.  David Finlay, design manager for Trang Imagineering, said his design of a Thompson Coupling is the world’s first and only constant velocity joint with no load bearing sliding surfaces.  Trang designs products for customers in the fields of agriculture, consumer goods, automotive and others.  See more on Trang at www.trang.com.au.

Americas

Top honors in the Americas went to Link-Belt Construction Equipment Co., headquartered in Lexington, Kentucky.  Judges were excited by Link Belt’s fast and successful bulk migration of a large crane assembly from its legacy CAD system into Solid Edge and its use of the new photorealistic rendering capabilities of Solid Edge Version 16’s Virtual Studio+.  More information on Link Belt’s use of Solid Edge.

Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA)

A drill-hammer design by Horst Biersack at ITW Befestigungssysteme GmbH in Ansbach, Germany took first place in the Europe, Middle East and Africa zone.  Judges were impressed with the use of Solid Edge Rapid Blue shape creation technology and the aesthetic appeal of the electric handheld tool.  ITW has been using Solid Edge since 1997.  See more on ITW at www.itw-befestigungssysteme.de.

Academic

In the Academic category, the winner was Wilfrid Reuter, a student atUniversité Paris-Sud IUT CACHAN(www.u-psud.fr/iut-cachan/iutcachan.nsf/indexcachan.htm) in Orsay, France.  Judges selected this entry due to the precise design of the moving mechanisms within the assembly, a drive for an underwing aircraft flap.  Reuter’s project led to his earning a degree from the technical university.
