Quest Aircraft Selects UGS’ Solid Edge and NX for Turboprop Airplane Design

FOR RELEASE Monday, April 11, 2005

PLANO, Texas – UGS Corp., a leading global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services, today announced that Quest Aircraft Company selected its Solid Edge® and NX™ software products for computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) of its new 10-seat single engine turboprop utility airplane, the KODIAK.

After in-house technical benchmark testing, Quest purchased Solid Edge based on its superior modeling, surfacing, drafting and design management capabilities, all deemed essential in the development of the aircraft.  Solid Edge and NX replaced Quest’s existing mainstream and high-end CAD/CAM systems.

“Solid Edge replaced SolidWorks® and NX replaced Catia® and SURFCAM at Quest,” said Stephen Brown, Americas vice president of indirect channel sales for UGS.  “UGS offers a complete portfolio of midrange through high-end, integrated and interoperable PLM applications.  Customers want to deal with one partner and as a result we are replacing more and more competitive systems such as Pro/Engineer®, Autodesk Inventor® or SolidWorks with combinations of Solid Edge and NX.”

“Being able to obtain all the software from one company with one support organization, knowing we can easily transfer design files between the mainstream and high-end systems and the greater technical capability of the UGS® products made this an easy decision,” said Keith Anderson, Quest’s Lead Engineer.  “The higher level of interoperability between Solid Edge and NX than between three existing systems was key factor in our decision to choose UGS as our PLM technology provider.”

Quest purchased 16 seats of Solid Edge, six seats of Insight Connect and five seats of NX.  Solid Edge will be used for the bulk of the modeling, including surfacing and NX will be used in advanced modeling roles as well as for the seamless design to manufacturing functions.  The availability of Insight Connect for those needing file accesses or full model interrogation but no design capabilities was also very important to Quest for keeping costs down in Quality Control, Assembly and Document Control.

Quest plans to bring new technologies into modern backcountry aviation, designing an aircraft for use in areas inaccessible to larger planes yet with ample passenger and cargo capacity to avoid the costs of making several trips.  Among the innovations are new wing designs for improved stability at slow flight and rugged landing gear with high ground clearance for landing on unimproved airstrips with surfaces that vary from soft sand to rocks.

Solid Edge Insight technology

“Solid Edge’s built-in design management (Insight) will play an important role in obtaining Federal Aviation Administration certification of our aircraft,” added Anderson.  “We will be able to get more of our people who are not mechanical designers involved, shorten our processes, communicate clearly with the manufacturing floor and ensure high levels of document and quality control.”

Better modeling and drafting performance

Solid Edge drafting performance was rated by Quest as being significantly faster.

“We performed a series of six comparative benchmark tests that show we can input large assemblies into our drawings more than four times faster than with the previous system,” concluded Anderson.  “Solid Edge proved very stable handling our large assemblies, even those with very complex parts.”

Quest is supported by both the UGS Global Technical Assistance Center and by certified UGS reseller Acuity Inc. headquartered in Portland, Oregon.  Acuity provides best-in-class 3D mechanical CAD and engineering tools as well as PLM and e-Business solutions to progressive product design and manufacturing companies.  See www.acuityincorporated.com.
