PLANO, Texas– UGS Corp., a leading global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services, today announced the winners of its first quarter 2005 Solid Edge® computer-aided design (CAD) contest.
A water-filter system for household use from Europe; a mold from Asia; and a Blood Glucose Monitor from the Americas took top honors. Each of these products were designed and rendered using Solid Edge® technology.

The Solid Edge contest highlights excellence in mechanical engineering and is open to designers working on any of more than 200,000 Solid Edge seats deployed around the world. The contest is held to promote the mechanical design excellence delivered by users of 3D solid modeling technology.

Top honors in Asia Pacific went toCamtech Engineering Ltd., which uses Solid Edge to increase productivity and assist customers to reduce their time to market for new products. Isaac Spedding at Camtech used Solid Edge Mold Design to rapidly generate mold base components and document the whole process to standards for Camtech. Russell Micinski, Sr. Associate of R&D Engineering at Bayer Healthcare Diabetes Care Division in Elkhart, Ind. designed the Assencia Breeze Blood Glucose Monitor and Internal Mechanism using Solid Edge. A Solid Edge user since 1994, Micinski modeled the parts in both the part and Sheet Metal Environment. The finished product is to be molded out of Polycarbonate while STL files are used for Rapid Prototype parts. For more information visit www.bayerhealthcare.com.
Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA)
Hans Kehlbeck from Hans Kehlbeck + Team, Industrial Design Studio, a Solid Edge user since 1999, designed a household water-filter system with Solid Edge and rendered it in Virtual Studio+. For the first time, Kehlbeck was able to develop a project without prior colored perspective freehand drawings/renderings since the presentation would not have given enough detail. The design was further detailed by means of 2D drawings. Rapid prototyping models visualized the first impression and allowed for checking ergonomics and fixing system of the handle as well as the fitting accuracy of a sliding element. The use of the round carafe/jar form clearly distinguishes the device from the competition. The system, which reduces 90% of chlorine, lead, cadmium and lime, is designed to look like a glass jar although it is made of plastic. The design image was also printed on posters to be used for advertising purposes at a trade fair. For more information visit www.kehlbeck-design.de.
Winners were also awarded for the fourth quarter 2004 Solid Edge Design Contest. In the Americas, the award was given to The Equipment Group at LeTourneau, Inc. (Longview, Texas) who used Solid Edge to design its new Pit Bull series of wheeled dozers. The winner in EMEA was Björn Holmgren, Design Engineer for Tour & Andersson AB who developed a new valve called Multiflow using Solid Edge. Tour & Andersson is headquartered in Ljung, Sweden and manufacturers control and balancing of waterborne heating and cooling systems. Rounding out the group was AP winner Paul Dawson from Australia who modeled and rendered a claw used in vending crane games.
