Customers use these components to improve interoperability with their CAM applications and machine tool products as well as provide a wide range of integrated, CAM-specific editing, design, simulation, verification and visualization capabilities.

CAM Application and Data Interoperability

Many CAM and machine tool products import models from other systems. Parasolid integration enables 100 percent data interoperability with the Parasolid XT format, which is supported by more than 350 software applications. Interoperability with other data formats is enabled by Parasolid features, data translators and the Parasolid Bodyshop geometry repair tool. Software developers can license our JT Open toolkit to rapidly enable 3D data visualization and collaboration with the JT format (the ISO standard).

Direct Model Editing Operations

Comprehensive modeling capabilities for tapering, blending, thickening, outlining, tessellation and detail simplification support manufacturing processes, including milling, molding, casting, turning and toolpath generation. Many Parasolid functions support CAM-specific modeling operations, including:

  • Roughing: Ignore small features that add irrelevant complexity
  • Material Removal: Update the work piece after each operation to optimize multistep, multitool operations
  • Geometric optimizations: Change the work piece to improve feed speeds and decrease tool changes (for example, replacing complex, non-functional fillets with nominal rolling ball fillets)

Integrated Parametric CAD

Adding parametric CAD modeling functionality to a CAM system provides greater flexibility when addressing manufacturing processes that the model designer did not foresee. New work pieces, process-related features, jigs and dies can be modeled using Parasolid. You can add parametric 2D sketching with the D-Cubed 2D DCM, and implement 3D constraint solving for modeling parts, jigs or molds with the D-Cubed 3D DCM. Offering an integrated design capability reduces the need for separate systems and suppliers, increasing the value proposition.

2D CAD and 2D Toolpath Generation

In many sheet material manufacturing situations in which a 3D CAD system is not required, the 2D DCM forms the foundation of a 2D parametric CAM/CAD environment. Additionally, the powerful profile offsetting capabilities of the D-Cubed Profile Geometry Manager (PGM) support the generation of 2D toolpaths.

Automated Path Planning

KineoWorks computes collision-free paths in complex kinematics environments with applications including coordinate measuring machines (CMM), robotic manufacturing and testing systems and machine tools. KineoWorks automates the complex and time-consuming task of computing robot trajectories. You can apply KineoWorks to offline simulation for preprogramming machine motion on the shop floor or embed KineoWorks on a machine or robot platform, together with a vision processing system, to compute motion paths in real time that account for the obstacles scanned in the local environment.

Machining and Machining Simulation

Parasolid provides the geometric modeling and evaluation capabilities to support direct machining from the solid model, machining simulation and toolpath verification. Simulating material removal and modeling the in-process work piece allows toolpaths to be checked and optimized.

Collision Detection

A critical aspect of machine simulation processes is fast, accurate collision and clearance calculations to help avoid clashes and gouges. PLM Components offers two specialist solutions for high-speed collision detection. The D-Cubed Collision Detection Manager (CDM) is optimized for high performance on exact (B-rep) geometry. The Kineo Collision Detector is designed exclusively for point cloud environments and faceted models in motion simulation.

Drawing Visualization

Drawings are an important input to many CAM workflows and rely on rapid and accurate hidden line computations. The Parasolid and D-Cubed Hidden Line Manager (HLM) components provide hidden line computations and are proven across a wide range of CAD/CAM applications.
