The School of Mechanical Engineering of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) has been founded in 1997 and originated from the mechanical Department of 76 years history. With a population of 1420 students in the school, more than 185 faculty members and technical staff are engaged in both research and teaching activities. The School of Mechanical Engineering has established widely co-operations with foreign enterprises and universities, such as GM, Unigraphics Solutions, EDS, Sun Microsystems, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, University of Stuttgart in Germany, and so on. GM and Shanghai Jiao Tong University established a satellite lab, "Satellite Lab of Gm Body Manufacturing at Shanghai Jiao Tong University", in School of Mechanical Engineering of SJTU on October 29th, 2000. (See the accessory files) There are several affiliated facilities in our school, such as S.M. Wu Manufacturing Research Far East Center, Satellite Lab of Gm Body Manufacturing at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Auto-body Manufacture Technology Center, United Laboratory of Autosheet Application Technology, Shanghai Advanced Manufacturing Technology R&D Center, State Hi Tech Program/ Computer Integrated Manufacturing Laboratory and so on. We have completed a lot of projects from automobile industry using the software consists of Unigraphics' CAD/CAE/CAM/PDM modules on the Sun Workstations. Now there are 35 Solid Edge software packages used in the undergraduate courses and graduate courses. Our education objectives are focused on to foster potential leaders in engineering science and industry with solid fundamentals, success in practice, spirit of creative capability and patriotic devotion. Since 1990, our school has reformed the educational system. We have leaded the CAD/CAM/CAE education into the curricula for 10 years. Because we have tight cooperation with a lot of multinational and local industrial partners, including Shanghai General Motors, Pacifica Automobile Technology Center, etc, it provides an enhanced educational environment for our students, who have a golden opportunity to apply what they learn in the classroom to important industry projects. A lot of graduates are working in automobile industries. Since 1997, there have been almost 60 graduates to enter the Shanghai GM.
