Adapting to market demands
For more than 25 years, Segui Industrias Metalurgicas (SIME) has carved its niche in the market with the design and manufacture of machinery. The company, located in Moncada, Valencia (Spain), built its solid reputation in the machinery market by focusing on a longstanding family tradition dedicated to engineering excellence and the consistent manufacture of the highest quality machines in its industry.
Today, SIME is expanding into new markets with the design, manufacture and assembly of complete, custom-made plants for aggregate, chemical, ceramics, timber, and fertilizer industries and general recycling. The services component of SIME incorporates industrial maintenance as well as dealership services for total upgrades of used machinery.
Focused R&D supports new product efficiency
SIME’s design department has traditionally played a major role in the product development cycle, as the company has allocated significant research and development investments into the improvement of its work tools.With the use of proven technology and processes, SIME has been able to achieve the best possible efficiencies in new product development. In addition, the ability to design and produce new components for existing machinery, and therefore minimize recurring maintenance requirements, allowed them to offer economical service and to readapt standard products for a range of markets. Extensive databases contained many years of work experience reflected in the vast number of 2D drawings.
Evolving to market needs
As a leader in its industry, SIME realized the need to evolve its technology and processes to define and develop products using 3D technology.“We have always embraced the need for continuous improvement,” says Arturo Segui, Technical Department Director, SIME. “A 3D solution would enable us to significantly cut costs and production time, while ensuring the precision and real-time status of the product data. In addition, the new software would give us the capacity to tackle projects that would have been nearly impossible with a 2D drawing program. It was time to take the next step in the evolution of our company.”
Versatile solid modeling
The continuous improvement goal led SIME to a detailed selection process for a versatile solid modeling solution. After evaluating three options, SIME chose Solid Edge from Siemens PLM Solutions. “With Solid Edge, we were able to evolve our 2D processes into 3D with very little effort,” says Segui. “We realized tangible benefits in a very short time for a relatively low investment, given the cost competitive entry price of Solid Edge. Additionally, Solid Edge promised the flexibility we needed to adapt our products to new markets.”
Within just two months of implementation, SIME was completely designing its new, small units in Solid Edge. Within six months, the engineers took on the assembly of large units; and they expect to fully implement Solid Edge in the very near future for development of even bigger units. “This quick progression is largely due to the power and user friendliness of Solid Edge,” continues Segui. “In addition, SIME engineers were very determined to maintain the company’s market leadership and reputation. And, we quickly realized the advantages of using an external source for training and technical advice as we evolved into the world of 3D.”
SIME employed the services of AVANTEK (www.avatek.es) for tailored training courses to specifically meet the company’s needs and for critical start-up technical advice.
Embracing 3D and the powerful capabilities of the solution is just the beginning for SIME. The engineers quickly realized the capability of the software to easily and quickly change pre-existing designs.With little effort, minor modifications allow SIME to re-use current designs to meet the needs of a diverse market. “The changes are automatically reproduced in all the views, evolutions and 2D plans,” comments Segui. “Previously, we would have made the changes in 2D on a drawing by drawing basis, which was prone to large margins of error.With Solid Edge, we are very confident in our ability to adapt existing products to successfully increase the overall scope of our market penetration.”
