3D transition makes Indian machine manufacturer more competitive

Miven Mayfran Conveyors wanted a better way to design its complex machines so that parts fit right the first time with less rework required during assembly.
Long-time AutoCAD user needed improvement
Miven Mayfran Conveyors manufactures conveyors, coolant filtration and other machinery used in the vegetable oil extraction industry. The company also provides engineering support services to some of its overseas customers. Since its founding in 1987, Miven Mayfran has become a leading manufacturer of chip and coolant systems, exporting equipment and expertise to Asian countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Pakistan. The company also has sold products to Europe, Australia and United Arab Emirates. Its 500+ customer list includes major automobile manufacturers such as Maruti Udyog Ltd. (a Suzuki company), Hyundai, Ford, Ashok Leyland, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., Hero Honda, Honda, Bajaj Auto and LML; reputed engineering firms such as L&T, TELCO, MICO; and machine tool builders such as HMT and LMW. Miven Mayfran is ISO 9001:2000 certified.
Miven Mayfran has used CAD since 1991 when it adopted 2D AutoCAD. Although AutoCAD was an improvement over drawing boards in that it helped improve the product quality, it did nothing to speed production or improve accuracy. During the AutoCAD years, Miven Mayfran needed four months to manufacture one machine. Interferences found during assembly required timeconsuming rework and occasionally parts were rejected.
Solid Edge supported the upgrade to 3D
The company was eager to see if more advanced 3D design software could address these issues. After seeing a demonstration of Solid Edge® software and learning of its organized, four-step process for evolving from 2D to 3D, the company decided to investigate this option further. Solid Edge’s Evolve to 3D program was well suited to Miven Mayfran’s situation because it includes a complete set of 3D translators for importing existing AutoCAD parts. In addition, every copy of Solid Edge contains AutoCAD Emulation Environments that permit users to work in the model space/paper space they are accustomed to. Miven Mayfran realized that these capabilities would make it possible for designers to keep up with their current workload while learning the new software, eventually moving to 3D at their own pace.
The company decided to make the transition, beginning with a pilot program in which Solid Edge was used to design a machine called a seed cracker. Modeling the new machine took four months. The design involved rotating components, gears, bearing fitments, high-speed rotational components and manipulation of brackets for correct functioning of the machine and proper alignments. The ability to visualize this complex assembly in its entirety on the computer screen before it was built was extremely helpful in avoiding interferences, establishing accurate dimensions and flattening complex sheet metal components along with accurate dimensions, bending angles and radius including tolerances. As a result, the drawings created from the solid models were highly accurate and there was no rework or rejection of parts. When the machine was produced, manufacturing time was drastically reduced and assembly time was considerably accelerated. There were other benefits as well. The power consumption of this machine was lower than that of similar machines, and the lifespan of the machine and its performance improved in actual fieldwork.
3D delivers long-term benefits
Since the successful pilot program, Miven Mayfran has seen consistent reductions in manufacturing time. Today, the company is able to manufacture four machines in one month – a four-fold increase over the previous one machine per month rate. The shorter manufacturing cycle for each machine reduces production costs per unit and also means faster deliveries to customers.
When Miven Mayfran extended the use of Solid Edge to its conveyors, similar improvements were seen, including the drastically reduced production times. The company has also seen the accuracy of its sheet metal components improve with the use of Solid Edge’s sheet metal design environment.

Following the success of Solid Edge at its home office, Miven Mayfran began using Solid Edge to provide engineering support services to some of its overseas customers. For example, Makino Asia (which was supplying complete machining solutions for the manufacture of cylinder lines to Proton Car, Malaysia) was having a problem with coolant disposal from its machine shop. Mr. Shrikar Nandavar who is heading engineering and Mr. Vinay Mallapur who is heading 3D modeling for engineering successfully executed the job using Solid Edge to redesign the piping system. The job was done very accurately, and for the lowest possible cost, making both Makino Asia and Proton Car very happy with the solution. Similarly when the Bangalore office of SGS International Inspection Agency needed to develop a mobile sampler for a coal supply system, Solid Edge delivered a design that was well appreciated by the customers.
