Forward-thinking manufacturer improves ability to innovate


Using Solid Edge allows design team to optimize products to reduce environmental impact while delighting city dwellers

BENITO got its start nearly 100 years ago producing forgings and castings for the textile industry. In 1992, the company expanded into the areas of sanitation, prefabricated concrete structures and urban furnishings. In 2001, BENITO began producing children’s playground equipment, and one year later started developing street lights as well. More recently, it expanded into the collection and management of urban waste, as well as products for multisport courts and child-friendly climbing structures called rockodromes. Another aspect of the company, BENITOartis, produces sculptures for public spaces.

BENITO is a leader in the field of urban facilities, as evidenced by its massive presence in Spain and growing activity in Europe and the rest of the world. The company has taken the lead in applying new technologies to urban equipment. Its ActivePoint product line, for example, integrates large-format LCD screens and touch-screen technology to provide up-to-date information kiosks for residents and tourists alike. BENITO also focuses its efforts on respect for the environment, using certified Forest Stewardship Council® wood from well-managed forests, and emphasizing energy efficiency in its products and facilities.

Upgrade to Solid Edge

BENITO designs, manufactures and distributes its products. To support these activities while maintaining its focus on new technologies and care for the environment, the company decided to implement 3D computer-aided design (CAD) software.

Over a period of 6 months, BENITO evaluated a number of 3D solutions, including Solid Edge® software from Siemens PLM Software.

BENITO purchased Solid Edge software licenses from the local Solid Edge distributor, ProCUE. The Solid Edge implementation was done in phases. The company initially acquired a single license and began training users. That was followed by the purchase of nine additional licenses.

“Our implementation of Solid Edge represents a great leap forward, because the move to 3D has increased our capability to design better and faster,” says BENITO’s Lluis Molist. The company uses Solid Edge for product design as well as at all of its production plants, including those in Spain and China. Designers use Solid Edge to create 3D models and 2D drawings. They also create standard designs by taking advantage of Solid Edge functionality for 3D virtual assemblies, sheet metal design, weldments and so on.

Optimized products

The use of Solid Edge has allowed BENITO to spend less time designing and manufacturing, while achieving better results. One example is the Eco fence, a bright yellow polypropylene structure that can be used to temporarily block access to an area. The use of Solid Edge enabled BENITO to optimize the weight and strength of this product.

Another example is the Futura combination curb/culvert cover. Using Solid Edge, engineers were able to simulate the kinematics of the different components to detect interferences. With Solid Edge, the design team was also able to make volumetric calculations of surface and mass.

Using Solid Edge allows BENITO to continue improving the welfare of urban dwellers, delivering products that meet the criteria of quality, economy, sustainability, practicality and design. “Since its introduction, we have relied on Solid Edge,” says Molist. “It was a wise choice; we consider Solid Edge the best 3D CAD software.”
