PLM helps boost productivity by 37 percent and reduce cycle time by 68 percent

Korean defense systems manufacturer uses NX and Teamcenter to improve collaboration and increase design re-use

LIG Nex1 is a leading supplier to Korea’s defense industry, providing products related to battlefield surveillance, command and control, and precision strikes. Founded in 1976 as Keumsung Precision Manufacturing, the company changed its name to LIG Nex1 in 2007. LIG Nex1 develops and produces precision electronic weapon systems, including missiles, underwater weapons, radar, avionics, tactical information and communication systems, fire control systems, naval warfare systems and electron optics. It is currently expanding its business to include total armament support systems for weapon systems operations.

In addition to its headquarters in Seoul, Korea, LIG Nex1 recently completed construction of a research and development (R&D) center in Pangyo. The company, which employs 2,450 people, also operates a factory in Gumi and research institutes in Daejeon and Yongin.

Improving productivity and access to expertise

LIG Nex1 develops advanced technologies through significant investments in R&D. This results in a vast accumulation of data and exceptional institutional expertise. To continue its record of innovation and growth, the company needed to upgrade its engineering data management practices to better leverage this expertise through more re-use of design data. In addition, the heavy workload of new product development required overall improvements to productivity.

To achieve these goals, LIG Nex1 decided to deploy product lifecycle management (PLM) technology. After a few months of rigorous validation, the company selected NX™ software and Teamcenter® software from Siemens PLM Software. “We chose a PLM approach that supports the highest possible productivity,” says Wan Ki Jeong, senior manager at LIG Nex1. “Siemens PLM Software’s solutions establish an environment for collaboration and allow easy search and retrieval of design data.”

In addition to using Teamcenter for collaboration, workflow automation and product data management, LIG Nex1 implemented the Teamcenter maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) solution. This is designed for companies such as LIG Nex1, which create complex products with long lifespans.

With support from Siemens PLM Software and its partner S-PALM Soft, LIG Nex1 deployed 745 seats of Teamcenter. Currently the company is expanding its use of this solution to manage all of the data generated during product development and production. “In addition to mechanical computer-aided design (CAD) data – in NX, I-deas and AutoCAD formats – this will soon include electronic CAD (ECAD) data as well, which LIG Nex1 is now implementing,” says Joon Jae Jang, senior manager at LIG Nex1. He notes, “Teamcenter will be used to manage the data. This innovative environment will let us realize true mechatronics, as the collaboration tools of Teamcenter facilitate seamless collaboration across departments.”

Remarkable PLM deployment

LIG Nex1 believes that its use of Teamcenter is “one of the most remarkable cases of a PLM deployment in the aerospace and defense industry in Korea,” according to Jeong. “LIG Nex1 is regarded as a company that has achieved the ultimate goals of a PLM implementation,” says Jeong. “These include management of the product development process, synchronization of the value chain, widespread accessibility and re-use of data, knowledge management, regulatory compliance, and enhanced productivity.”

The company has seen a remarkable gain in productivity since adopting Teamcenter. The improvement is due in part to more design re-use, but productivity has also been enhanced by streamlining the product development process. Prior to the implementation of Teamcenter, the process required 49 steps. Today, with more efficient practices for data management and collaboration, it requires only 17 steps. Productivity improvements such as these have resulted in measurable advantages. “In fact, our use of Teamcenter has contributed to a 68 percent reduction in cycle time, representing a 37 percent improvement in productivity,” notes Jeong.

LIG Nex1 also reports improvements in customer satisfaction, which the company attributes to standardizing its workflows, digitizing all design data, and capturing knowledge gained during product development. “As a result of our Teamcenter implementation, LIG Nex1 has secured the dominant position in obtaining orders compared to our competitors,” Jeong adds.

Future plans for LIG Nex1’s PLM system include the deployment of 400 additional Teamcenter seats. LIG Nex1 also plans to broaden its use of Teamcenter functionality, eventually adding more Teamcenter modules.
