Multi-Million Dollar Software Grant from UGS to FAMUEnhances Educational Experience for Engineering Students

PLANO, TEXAS and TALLAHASSEE, FLA. – UGS Corp, a leading global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services, and Florida A&M University announced today an in-kind software grant with a list price commercial value of $12.8 million, and a comparable grant for the coming academic year. The two grants will provide faculty and students in the joint FAMU-FSU College of Engineering with valuable engineering software, training and technical support. The in-kind software grant is the largest of its kind in FAMU history.

“This investment is reflective of the faith we place in your dedicated teachers and outstanding students, along with the FAMU/UGS Regional Productivity Vision in Florida,” said Dave Shirk, executive vice president, UGS Global Marketing. “Helping to provide the technological bridge from such institutions as Florida A&M to the global innovation networks of today only helps to broaden the experiences of the 21st Century engineers who are matriculating there. Knowledge, enhanced by innovation, leads to endless possibilities.”

C.J. Chen, dean of the engineering college, said the in-kind grant would greatly benefit the students. “This type of corporate support helps to give our students the best experience possible as they matriculate here. It is very important to have partners like UGS. The UGS grant will mean that our students are actually leveraging the same type of technology that is used by engineers throughout the industry – right here at our university.”

Chen, dean of a Historically Black College and University (HBCU), was honored in Baton Rouge earlier this month by receiving a UGS Innovations Award for his leadership at the joint FAMU-FSU engineering school. He also worked with AMIE (Advancing Minorities’ Interest in Engineering) to support UGS’ announcement of a major initiative, “Rebuilding the South,” which awarded $1 billion in 2006 grants to 50 schools, including FAMU, across the five states impacted by Hurricanes Rita and Katrina – Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.
