NX 3 Introduces Ability to Directly Open and Save CATIA Native Files

In order to compete effectively, companies have often opted to implement multiple systems to match the systems implemented by their customers. This approach requires a significant support burden and can be cost prohibitive for many smaller organizations.

The UGS "Open by Design" strategy focuses on delivering tools that enable companies to openly share product data within their extended enterprise - partners, suppliers, and customers. With NX 3, users have data coverage for CATIA v4 and v5, allowing companies to standardize on NX while still having the ability to bi-directionally work with CATIA files. Direct translation reduces the need for intermediate file formats, such as IGES or STEP, and allows for "on-demand" translation of files, improving the access to information and streamlining the overall process flow when working with partners.

This direct translation capability augments the standards-based STEP, IGES and DWG translation offerings that allow organizations to work with partner companies using CATIA. The translator is directly linked to the standard File Open, File Save As, File Import and File Export dialogs; and, it provides an external interface for processing large sets of files as a batch operation. The data coverage for this translator enables the direct translation for assemblies and geometry, including solids, surfaces and wire frame data into and out of NX. This new translator supplements the existing CATIA v4 translation functionality that has been available for a number of years.
