Contour Profiling
NX Machining Offers Innovative Solution for 5-Axis Programming
As the price difference between fixed and variable axis machines narrows, more and more machining facilities are switching over to 5-axis machining centers. The versatility of these multi- axis machines allows NC programmers to machine complex shapes in far fewer set-ups than is traditionally possible with fixed axis machines.
UGS extends its leadership position in aerospace and complex machining industries with the introduction of the new Contour Profiling module in NX 3. This enables users to easily program 3D dual contact (wall and floor) tool paths with continuously varying tool axis. The user is required to pick only the floor geometry of complex cavities. Automatic identification of adjacent walls and the computation of varying tool axis to match the walls make this feature ideal for air-frame components. Options for multiple offset passes along the floors and the walls enable efficient material removal. This automatic tool path operation is 10 times faster than traditional sequential milling which requires extensive interactive selections.
Further improvements in NX 3 multi axis programming include smoother tool axis interpolation and finer tool axis positioning to safely machine hard to reach features.
