PLM Perspective - September 2004
Digital Manufacturing: An Emerging Management Priority
Two of the biggest challenges (and opportunities) manufacturers have faced this decade are the pace of change in market demand for new products and product derivations, and the pressures of competing in an expanding global market. Many have responded to these changes by adopting PLM software and practices that, at a minimum, streamline the front end of product development - the design engineering component. This is appropriate given the fact that 80% of a product's development cost is determined in the earliest stages of its planning. What these companies are coming to realize now, however, are the immediate time and cost savings benefits that can also be obtained by applying similar digital decision making to the downstream manufacturing process while, at the same time, leveraging those decisions to plan ahead for changing production needs. Proof of this trend is seen in a recent report from leading industry analyst Daratech, Inc., which shows the market for digital manufacturing process management rose 11% in 2003 with 12% growth in total sales expected through 2007. There is good reason for this.
CIMdata Names UGS the Market Leader in CAM Software and Services
For the third straight year, UGS is leading the market in CAM revenues and is projected to maintain this status going for 2004
CIMdata, Inc. has named UGS as the leading vendor in the computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software market based on revenue generated from software and related services for the third year in a row. They also project that UGS will maintain this leadership position for 2004.
NX Digital Manufacturing Solutions Software of Choice for Aerospace Dynamics

Aerospace Dynamics International (ADI) manufactures large components such as aircraft wing spars and bulkheads and panels for the space shuttle's external fuel tanks. Due to their large size and critical applications, these parts can be difficult to machine. "Our parts are very large and we must hold extremely close tolerances," explains Brian Carlson, NC programming manager at ADI. "Yet our customers are raising the bar higher and higher each year in terms of how soon they expect deliver." The installation of NX Machining (NX CAM) solutions gave them the combination of fast programming and complete motion control needed to meet customers' tight delivery schedules. For jobs that require high speed machining (HSM) on five-axis machines, NX has become ADI's software of choice.
The Best of All Worlds for Mold and Die

Vero International Software, one of the world's fastest growing CAM vendors develops CAD/CAM applications for the mold and die industry. Their challenge is to create intelligent specialized software that is also compatible with many other applications. This, and their need for advanced modeling functionality, led Vero to become the first company to license Parasolid on a PC.
NX 3 - Transforming Digital Product Development
With the availability of NX 3 in the third quarter of 2004, many new capabilities and enhancements will make it easier than ever before to evaluate new product development based on quality and cost criteria - key components of Lean Design and Design for Six Sigma process initiatives.
NX Simulation Process Studio - New in NX 3
Transforming digital product development
Automating repetitive tasks eliminates bottlenecks and increases development speed. This in turn increases opportunities for valuable specialists to spend more time focused on design and simulation tasks and performing more "what-if" analysis activities to support product innovation initiatives. NX Process Studio is one of the many new and exciting process support tools from UGS that will bring immediate value to teams tasked with developing the infrastructure to support critical, corporate initiatives such as Lean Design.
New Automation Foundation Coming in NX 3
A next generation programming toolkit for NX software development will be available with NX 3. Based on a common application program interface (API), the common API provides language freedom by delivering the exact same capabilities in two of the most popular programming platforms, C++, .NET (with plans to deliver Java in the near future). Customers now have the freedom to select the automation path that best allows them to capture workflow knowledge and automate and customize user interactions within NX.
UGS Scores Leading Marks in PLM Industry's First Independent Study on Openness
Industry analyst firm Collaborative Product Development Associates, LLC (CPDA) recently released a report entitled Defining the PLM Open Landscape. The study, an effort to define a common reference model for Oenness, based on end user input and vendors offering, evaluated the offerings and business practices of six different suppliers of product lifecycle management (PLM) solutions based on thirty criteria in four categories related to openness. In the report UGS scored higher than all other suppliers in two of the study's four major categories with leading marks in all four.
Teamcenter Sourcing Links Product Development, Procurement and Supplier Communities - Now Integrated with Teamcenter!
Last year, UGS announced the acquisition of the eBreviate web-based strategic sourcing technology from A.T. Kearney. This product, which UGS takes to market as "Teamcenter Sourcing," is a fully integrated web-based solution that transforms indirect and direct material sourcing. With Teamcenter Sourcing, companies can engage the entire supply chain by enabling a collaborative environment that supports better cost management throughout the entire product design process. The result: shortening the design process allows companies to release new products more quickly and cost-effectively, ultimately improving the top and bottom line simultaneously to achieve a competitive advantage.
Solid Edge 16 Shipments Begin in September

2005 NX Global Calendar Program - Deadline Extended to September 30
Entries are starting to arrive for the 2005 NX Global Calendar Program, but to accommodate a few customer requests for a little extra time... we are extending the deadline to September 30. Last year's program generated over 100 high-quality customer images. Many have been used in the calendar, in other UGS marketing materials. Participation in the program offers your company widespread exposure - not only through the calendar itself, but also through related activities such as editorial opportunities. For example, two of the 2004 winning images have been featured on the cover of Cadalyst magazine - April and June issues. Image guidelines and entry guidelines are available on the calendar program site.
